I am trying to decide between a regular crosshair and a mildot reticle. How important is mil dot for a casual target shooter that will be shooting on a range that can go up to 600 yards at known distances.
The easy answer it's not. There are other benefits to having a MIL or MOA reticle but if your just using it as crosshairs there is no real benefit. The MIL or MOA graduated reticles can be used to hold for range or wind, and to determine the range of a target. Try the link below it should answer most of your questions.
