lmao yeah i know its a dumb question, i know nothing about any of it is why i asked, let me refrase, how does it work for leo and how does it work for military? thats all i wanted to know, im an electricain with a rem 788 from when dinosaurs roamed the land that thinks snipers are cool c'mon give a break lol i figured leo's are assigned a rifle but what about military?

The gun wont make you the best at the range. Shooting several thousand rounds a year, and wearing out barrels is how you do that.
Of course if you are comparing yourself to deer hunters, shooting more than one box a year will probably put you in the upper half of the group. If you can zero your own scope, that puts you up in the top 30 percent. In the military, we dont hunt deer, so that makes up unqualified to answer your questions.

Mate don't worry about it. Just get Kirby Allen to build you one of his super magnums. You will then have a rifle better than most Snipers...LEO or Mil.
Being able to shoot it to its full potential, well that's another matter.

First off, I am no sniper. But these basics should apply to anyone that wants to be a better shooter. Take your 788 and shoot the piss out of it. Get into handloading and start developing loads that coincide with reloading manuals. Work on accuracy and repeatability. Practice at different distances, different angles. I wouldn't put any money into the 788 to make it better. There are better versions of rifles that produce better results and have more options than the 788 (Like the Rem 700 )and others. As far as buying a good rifle to help you refine your shooting...We need to know more of what you expect out of that particular rifle... Is weight a factor? Will you be packing it on a hunt? What distance is the rifle going to be geared for? What caliber do you want to use? (If you don't know this, give us some more info and you will atleast get 10 different recommendations and most will be great. All we need is a better question.......Fire away...SmokeRolls

Dude, you are going to want to check out Counter Sniper for your optics choice...
In all seriousness any of those rifles will give you good practice, which is what will make you a better shooter. Shoot the barrel out, have it trued up when you rebarrel it. Maybe get a new stock and have it bedded. The possibilities are endless, but you have to learn the basics first. As such, my first piece of advice is to pull out a whopping $10 dollars and subscribe to the Training forum. That will serve you better than attempting to compensate bad habits with better equipment. The online training forum is at the top of this page.

hey guys im not trying to piss anyone off i just got annoyed by the guys with nothing other than smart remarks, but anyways, yeah i have been doing some reading, its either gonna be the 700 sps tactical, or the 700p, but heres the prob, i like the sps tactical but the stocks are a problem, so then i look at the 700p but its heavy, so do i get the spsT and change the stock or get the 700p and cut the barrel down to 20", i appreciate the help guys

get the one you like the most judging by weight, size, looks etc. youre going to modify it eventually, its inevitable amongst us shooters. but mainly just get trigger time. chances are, most people will never out shoot what their rifle is capable of with practice. its a trial and error thing, just learn your rifle and you'll soon realize what you need to to change. not trying to sound like a dick here, but, if you have to ask a question like this then chances are a factory stock rem 700 or the like will do you just fine for some time until the wallet and your ability dictates otherwise. put it to you this way, i bet i could hand a factory stock rem 700 sps to sendero_man, phylodog, montana marine, etc and they could out shoot me even if i had a fully custom built rig. get what you can afford and shoot the barrel off it.

I think that most standard factory varmint guns are currently being produced with sufficient care that they will shoot better than most shooters can make them shoot. My advice is start with something very common, and very reliable.
Although a little pricey, and long and heavy for long carries, the Savage 12 VLP DBM, which can be found here, will do everything you want. The .308 chambering is excellent, and the .22-250 version with the 1:9" rifling will allow for some interesting LR performance with heavier bullets. Just bear in mind that for match shooting, the .308 will hold its accuracy longer into the match before it heats up too much for peak accuracy. For shooting out to 1000yd, with good ammo, either will reach; but I think the .308 will hold a bigger edge for match work due to its more conservative barrel heating behavior.
But becoming the shooter who can realize the full potential of such a firearm is a task which requires a lot of practice and training. Attempting this with such a firearm will be costly and can result in (a) worn out barrel(s).
The better approach to the practice/training task is to get a reasonably priced and reliable .22LR with an economical scope, save the money for ammo, and do the work on the .22lr; whose barrel is very likely to prove impervious to the day in, day out work of developing the marksman from the newer guy. Your wallet, and your fullbore gun's barrel, will thank you.
Seek out help in person. If you adopt a cooperative attitude, it wll take you a long way.
To the rest of us, maybe this poster should fill out their profile, and maybe their naivete is showing; but I remind us all that we were all newguys here once, and to treat such folks the way we treated you. We'd all benefit more from that kind of approach.

Yes a well built rifle will generally be a little heavier.. If you get used to packing and carrying. It's no biggie.. If you want a 7 lb complete rifle with optics that will shoot very consistantly as it heats up then you are probably dreaming. There was alot of good advice meantioned above before this one.. rackchaser, i am NOT a sniper, but i have talked to the people (SATU) who built sniper rifles that were used in VN, i also got to test fire some of the rifles, fantastic accuracy at any range out to 1,500 yds., my best group at 1,000 yds. was 8", not great but i thought it was super excellent !

just to add some fuel to the fire, IMHO the usual SH bullshit usually comes from those those that ARE ACTUALLY OPERATERS, or formerly as such, and that answers to what the oringal question is is easily found just about any place, even wikithis or that, discovery / history / military channels, or just by doing a search for u.s. issued sniper rifles freebie > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sniper_rifle. i would have to believe the "real deals" here know that it's mostly common knowledge of this stuff to anyone that does a little digging, therefore the "real deals" toss in the WTF responses.
plus if there is the "not so common knowledge stuff", that wouldn't be discussed on an open forum anyway, to protect the sensitive nature and tactics of previous, present, and future operations and the persons that perform them. unless you did service with the guy your talking with, and can confirm on a personal level that it's actually him, you generally have no idea who the hell you are talking to on an open forum.
extreme case: how do we actually know the OP (no offense) isn't someone that would like to cause harm to our forces or civilian population by "blending in" using official looking equipment? we don't.
although i'm sure it was an innocent question, there's alot of these popping up lately, so the "ripping apart" to prevent a situation as described above is somewhat justified, don't you think?
common knowledge - if you are an operater or not, issued means issued. there may be 2 or 3 options of "approved issued gear" depending on your MOS, AO, and what branch of the service your currently under, and applicability of what exactly your operation is, but you don't show up in benning or the other training sites with your deerhunting winchester 70 and a couple of boxes of remington core lokt.
outside of military, in the more sensitive inteligence fields or "darker" LE agencies, there may or may not <(disclaimer) be some more room for choice, but once again it's of "approved" gear. your not going to show up with a dirty harry .44 magnum 29 and feel lucky.

If you are looking for a "light" tactical rifle you are going to have to do some serious saving. They are by general rule, not hunting rifles. They are made to be rigid and tough to withstand what "snipers" put them through. Based on what you have said, if you like the 700P stock, get it. It is GENERALLY cheaper to have the barrel cut and recrowned than it is to get a new stock, although deals can be had. If you want quality on the cheap here is my non-sniper suggestion.
1. Subscribe to online training
2. Take online training to heart
3. Purchase 700P
4. Purchase used SWFA Super Sniper 10x scope
5. Dry practice using aforementioned training
6. Shoot using aforementioned training
7. Cut and recrown barrel to 20" if desired
8. Customize from there
Lastly, like Mike said. It appears as if you have not done much reading on the site as there are a plethora of threads on these subjects. Do your reading, do you training. Come back with solid questions that have not been beaten to death and you will receive much better replies.
