Re: Question on Coating for Laminate Wooden Stock
My process is as followed,
Sand to 600 grit sand paper with a block. Laminate you need to use a block, because the glue is stronger then the wood and to have a nice flat coat you need to take out glue and wood at the same rate.
Follow that up with a sandable sealer. Local wood store. I cut it 50-50 with denatured alchol on the first coat. Sand 200 grit back to 600. Low spots will show, because the sealer is shinny!
Then I use a full strenght (i think its over kill) but it really makes sure it is all flat. I do this inside and out, to make sure moisture is kept out.
Sanding done, I shoot with Auto clear coat. 10-15 coats. Let dry and wet sand starting at 1000 grit to 2000 grit for shinny wet look.
I have also used tru oil, takes a little longer, but the finish can be good.
Here is a pic of one I did rencenlty in auto clear:
Here is one with water lox (spelling)
I found a rub finish to be a lot of work. I could not keep the dust out of it while it dried.
