I have no experience with Keltec brand. What is an educated view of this brand. I am looking for a good CCW, this is a light small 9mm, it just didnt feel like a good quality. Before I spend the money, what do others think.

Re: Question on KELTEC PF-9

Some people love 'em, some people hate 'em. Some people have problems, but most are within ~200 round break-in period. They work great for the price, but make sure to break it in and there are proponents of doing a fluff and buff (kel tec forums) which my impression is simply using a dremel to smooth out any tooling marks etc.

For detailed instructions on the fluff and buff:

My dad and I haven't had any problems with his PF9 or my p3at, though we actually purchased used guns with a few hundred rounds through them for the aforementioned reasons

My biggest complaint is that I hate double action trigger pulls. I'm thinking of getting something striker fired.

Re: Question on KELTEC PF-9

Had one and got rid of it. The trigger pull didn't bother me and mine was reliable and shockingly quite accurate. That said, I've never had a pistol that bit so hard. The thing was flat out painful to shoot. bit both on the trigger finger and in the rear. I hated to shoot it. Got a PM45 now and love it.

Re: Question on KELTEC PF-9

If your not sure about it then I wouldn't get one. You'll just end up constantly thinking how you should have gotten a different one instead. If your looking for a somewhat inexpenisve 9mm I'd consider a Kahr CW9 or even a Kahr CW40 in 40S+W. The Karh P and PM series are a little bit smaller than the CW series but cost quite a bit more. I have a CW9 and I have no complaints about it at all. It fits my hand great, no snag, and pretty slim. It's got a nice smooth trigger pull too.

Re: Question on KELTEC PF-9

A quick note on "bite" but not recoil. A lot of people use inner-tube rubber around the grip if the checkering is too sharp, and the trigger has been known to be covered in 2 layers of heat shrink for the same reason.

Nate

Re: Question on KELTEC PF-9

Me and a couple of buddies have them and so far they are good to go. Like said above, fit and finish is mediocre, trigger pull leaves something to be desired and it does bite you a little bit in the grip but for what they are intended for they shine. Very compact and light, surprisingly good accuracy and price is reasonable.

Re: Question on KELTEC PF-9

I own several different Kel-Tec pistols but not the PF-9. The trigger on the PF-9 is infinitely better than our P-11s which are truly awful! But 14 ounces for 11 rounds of 9 mm is no small thing and I have accepted the qualitative trade offs for the right price; these guns will get dirty, scratched, bonked, dropped, etc. So I don't feel quite so wounded at the price point of Kel-Tec's products as I would a Kahr, S&W, Sig (Seen the new P238?).

The P32 and P3ATs have great triggers and do respond well to a little polishing.

I prefer their chrome pistols as they spend their time in my pocket or on my ankle, and it gets "sultry" there most of the time!

The downside of the PF-9 as I see it is the reduced capacity in order to make it thinner. But the trigger is a big improvement. My hands are pretty calloused and have little problem with grips made of anything short of broken glass.

I bought a .40 cal slide and a couple .40 mags for conversion of my P-11 about 10 years ago. Holy shit what a piece-o! Unbelievably innaccurate and recoil felt like it would break the gun! They later dropped the whole .40 line for lack of consumer approval!

Re: Question on KELTEC PF-9

My PF-9 has worked for me so far, however I only have about 200-300 through it because as mentioned above it does have a bit of a bite. Mine was also suprisingly accurate.

Re: Question on KELTEC PF-9

I loved mine. As accurate as any(would put the whole mag in the 10 ring every time at defensive distances) if I did my job and smaller than most. It did seem to like 124 gr ammo better. I put well over 500 rounds through it and can't remember a failure. Get the finger tip extenders, especially if you have big hands and in hindsight a Houge slip on grip/inner tube or shrink tube might have been nice. Sure the trigger pull was long but not too heavy and fairly smooth.
