From what I've read, NFA items need to be stored in such a manner as to be inaccessible to unauthorized users when you're not within visual. I always keep a pistol next to my bed and have been thinking about picking up a suppressor for it. Do I need to have it in a locked case whenever I leave/sleep or does the locked house count (I live alone btw)? Additionally, I have a Form 1 SBR pending that also falls under this question. Anyone have info on this?

Re: question on NFA storage

Using a suppressor for home defense would be a positive thing and using it as the device was intended to do. Communicating with 911 or family during or after a self-defense shooting would be much easier if your ears aren't ringing.

Cesium,
I couldn't agree more.

Anyone else know if a locked house counts? Further, Eddie raised the point of theft. Would any legal liabilities come up if NFA items were stolen from within a locked home?

Seriously...why there's such tight rules on this stuff I'll never understand..

Re: question on NFA storage

A locked house is fine as long as you are the only person who has access to the item. Your locked vehicle that no one else has keys to is also fine. A plastic case with a padlock that only you can unlock, even if the case and item is at a friend's house is ok. BATFE does not publish any set in stone storage requirements, so long as no one but you have legal access to the item, you should be good to go.
