Got a question. I have a guy in another state that wants to buy my rifle. He wants me to ship it to his favorite FFL. What kind of payment should I accept? Paypal? Moneyorder? Do I ship FEDX or UPS next day with insurance? I just don't want to get ripped off or sell to a lunatic.

Get payed whatever feels best. A USPS MO works good, Ship when you have the money. I believe you can ship with both carriers with possible prerequisites being having to ship from a hub etc.

USPS money order. Cash it at the PO then ship the gun with them while you are there. The USPS will ship long guns with less hassle than UPS or FedEx and cheaper (usually) too. I have done it a few times without issue. I used priority mail, insured, delivery confirmation.

Yep... All good info. I've shipped many rifles via USPS. One thing though, some Postal workers don't know you can ship with them and might try to tell you that you can't. I've had it happen. You just usually need to speak to someone in charge. You will also want to bring a copy of the FFL that should have been faxed to you or sent with the payment so you can show the people at the PO that the address you're sending it to is actually a dealer. It's not your job to worry about the guy at the other end. His dealer will go through the proper channels before he releases the rifle to him. PayPal is NOT a good option because they are not firearms friendly and could mess with you if they get wind of a firearm transaction. I don't trust them. Definitely insure it and require a signature so it doesn't get left at the front door and stolen. The box you send it in should NOT indicate what's in it. They don't want to tempt their employees or anyone else by advertising that you're sending a rifle.

I just have a few recommendations that I always do.

Obtain a signed copy of the FFL dealer license through the mail and check the License on the ATF site.

Only accept payment by a USPS Money Order, and cash it at the Post Office prior to shipment.

Do not use Paypal for anything of consequence. I've been told of incidents where Paypal accounts were frozen...ie., the money basically confiscated by Paypal, for use in a firearms related transaction. These are personal accounts from people I know, I didn't just hear that on the internet, although those stories are out there.

Buy insurance and be sure to save all the receipts.

Use delivery verification...(it's like .50 extra)

Very important...don't just throw the rifle in a box, pack up the rifle like a gorilla were going to handle it...USPS breaks a lot of stuff...it amazes me sometimes... When you thing it's packed well enough...double that. An inexpensive plastic gun case inside a box is a good idea.

Anyway, good luck with your transaction.

I got into the habit of taking pictures of every step of my packing on all items. The item, bubble wrap, filler materials, box, and close ups of all taping. Paid off when FedEx destroyed an "indestructible" Bear Tracks gun case. Fortunately, it was just the case. My buyer was able to recover his money because I was able to provide pictures to prove my packaging was more than adequate.
