Well I got some nice GG&G back up sights and have run a good 2 boxes of the $20 a box federals (blue)+ tax and my .308 works great on them, but I need more bang for the buck!

I know that wolf/silver bear is mainly used for saigas and so forth and that it's the last thing I should use in an AR if I want it to keep functioning properly--and I won't use that stuff--but are there any other makes of ammo that I should avoid?

It's a DPMS LR-308 and is still in the break-in period. I've shot 20 rounds, cleaned after each round, and then shot 20 more, cleaning after every 5th round. I've seen some mil surplus serbian made ammo and some turkish ammo for sale at around $0.70 a round for the 168 grain--will this work and is there anything cheaper?

I definitely don't want to buy any ammo that will increase wear, I just want something that will get me on target and decrease my ammo costs (which I have enough of with 8 calibers of guns to feed).

Just need this for practice--still sticking with 180 grain federal power-shoks for hunting hogs. Looking to buy 300-500 rounds to start off with.

It depends. Some people swear by the cheap stuff and their ARs run just fine using Wolf. Your barrel will wear at about the same rate however. The only difference is that you will be running cleaner burning powder and less gunk will build over time hence decreasing reliability to some extent. Rate of wear will increase using hotter loads not by using cheap ammunition. I would just avoid steel cased ammo.

You will get mixed answers.

I know this, the first couple thouasand rounds of any ammo I ever ran through an AR were Wolf. When you could get 1K shipped to your door for $110 IIRC.

It ran fine through the rifle, which I think was a ban era RRA. If you dont mind the cleaning, I dont see why you couldnt run anything through without damage. I would just make sure the cases were brass. And keep them.
