Lets stay in the $1200.00 or less category. I plan on getting a 308 rifle built that will shoot in the 1000yd club. But I may not shoot that distance the majority of the time. More than likely the majority of my time will be spent in the 300yd to 600yd range. Occasionally I may venture out a little farther. My question would be what scope? I've about driven myself stupid looking at them, now I think I'm more confused than when I started.

This all started when a couple of friends of mine got some custom rifles and they shoot on the weekends. One of them lives on a lake and he has targets set up on the far side. the lake runs at an angle. So they range from 300yd to 600yd. I want to go shoot with them. I plan on getting a 308 Remington 700 build. It's just the optics that giving me a migraine. Any help would be great.

Re: question

Most stock Rem700's are probably going to need a new stock on them, so if your budget is strict you may want to account for that. As for scopes, it really comes down to doing research for what you personally like. You've got your price range, next you need to determine what power you want and if you want variable power. Then there's parallax, objective size, illuminated reticle, mil dot etc reticles. Once you know what you really want you can easily find the scope for you. I find the hide to be more helpful if you already have a few choices to select between.

This Bushnell is a little more but well worth it.

Any of the Vortex PST would be great also.

Both of these would be good choices in your price range. Get matching ret/adj so you could shoot hold overs or dial your dope. ffp is a must in my opinion.
The longer you spend brooding over this the longer it will take you to start smelling powder burn.

Re: question

$1200 or less really opens a lot of options. In all honesty, any one that you choose is likely to satisfy your needs. They are all pretty darn close. I have a Weaver 3-15x50 EDMR and I like it a lot. Sure, I could get higher magnification, zero-stop turrets, different reticle, blah blah blah, the fact is the scope is serving it's purpose well and I'm able to shoot 600 yards every week or two. If I find the scope is limiting me somehow by a lack of a specific feature or when I'm ready for something new, then I will sell it and upgrade. I'm sure if I got the Bushnell or Vortex I would be writing the exact same response.

Like someone else already stated, you'll likely need to replace the stock on a factory R700. I wouldn't custom build an action/barrel if thats what you were planing. I would get a factory built R700 and replace the stock if necessary.

Re: question

Vortex PST or SWFA Super Sniper

In your budget don't forget a quality stock and quality rings. I think for that distance you probably want a bipod too, maybe a rear bag. Scope caps, suppressor...
