Just had a brief discussion about this in the shout box, but wanted to further discuss it.

If you were to single point thread the male, and female threads on a muzzle break/suppressor, then Broach the female end, and Time mill the male end, would this work effectively as a quick detach system?

And due to the answers i know i will most likely get, i'll explain my i think this would be very effective.-

Say you have a 5/8X24TPI thread, common for muzzle attachments, at 24TPI, it would take about 14-15 turns of the specific attachment from engagement to full seat. Now, with the "grooves" cut in, you could simply slide the attachment all the way back, and having one, maybe two rotations to full lock. this would ensure the accuracy and alignment of single point threading, while employing a QD method.

Thoughts?

Re: Quick Detach threads.

This what you're talking about?

I've heard it called interrupted threads or interrupted screw. You can only tighten it down at the most 1/4 turn, after that you're starting to lose engagement surface again. That's if you had two threaded portions, if you had 3 engagement areas you'd only have 1/6 turn. The problem I'd see is that threads wear with use.

Re: Quick Detach threads.

I have done it and I know there are a few guys making adapters with interupted threads. But yes It would be better used with a lock of some sort. On my next one I am going to use a ball detent system commonly used in machining processes for stops and such. You can buy them out of MSC or other industrial catologues. It is pretty time consuming. Timing the various parts but if a guy has the know how and desire it can be done.
