Rifle Scopes Quick math question about the Mil formula

If I am trying to range an 18" target, is this correct:

18 x 27.778 / 3.5Mil = 142 yards

18 x 27.778 = 500.004 right, if this is correct couldn't you just divide everything by xMil?

I've got MOA nailed, now I just need to get Mil down.

BTW, I am converted to MOA/MOA 4 life!!

Just wanted to know Mil because it's universal.

Yes if you are only ranging 18" targets than you can leave the 500 as a constant and then just divide by the mil reading.

Why?

The MOA formula for that target would be:

Range(yards) = 18 * 95.5 / image size(MOA)

How is that easier?

If you want to speed up those range calculations, whether MOA or mil, just get a Mildot Master.

Instead of 95.5, I use 100 because it is close enough for me:

18 x 100 / xMOA = yards

This is accurate enough for me and will bring down bambi.

At a couple hundred yards it will be close enough but as you move farther out you will start missing. Using a mildot master, which also works for MOA, will be fast and accurate.
