quick question. could one of you reloading gurus explain to me the pros and cons if there are any cons to partial resize. Also I have partially resized the some cases of 7mm wsm and I can see the line where my resize went down. that distance is approximately 3/4 of an inch down from the case mouth. Would that be too short, too long, or doesnt really matter as long as i can stick that empty cartridge in my chamber and bolt it down. if it is hard to bolt down do I need to go ahead and resize a little further down? anyway thanks for your help and if you have any more tips on partial resizing im all ears! thanks

Agree on wrong section.
Answer is to FL RS your cases every time. Bump shoulder back about .002 each time. No advantage to neck or partial RS. Even the BR shooters are now FL RS.

In general, what you are referring to is "neck sizing" and bumping the shoulder back. The idea is that your fireformed brass will then be able to be used with minimal case expansion during firing, reducing the variances between cartridges and also the amount of stress on the brass caused by full length resizing so you obtain more case life. Personally, I use a case mic and then always full length resize and rock on but that's me. As already advised, you'll obtain more info by posting this in the reloading section. Also, do a search on "neck sizing." Good luck!

Guys, what the OP is doing is not neck sizing/shoulder bumping. It appears that he is running a FL sizer down 3/4 of the way on the case. If this is true, the neck portion of the die will not even contact the neck of the case nor will the shoulder of the die contact the shoulder of the case. He is only partially resizing the case body and perhaps running the expander through the neck.

OP: I don't think this is a good idea at all. Either neck size (with a neck sizing die) and periodically bump the shoulder back (with a body die) or full length resize. It sound like you could use a good reloading book. A good one to start with would be ABCs of Reloading. Be very careful using the internet as a resource for learning about reloading. There is lots of bad advise out there.

There are also dies that neck size and bump the shoulder in one step without FL resizing.

Edit: BTW, I've gone to FL resizing on just about everything.
