I just had my gunsmith screw on my new barrel and drove 2 hours to have this done but what I forgot was that im changing from .308 bolt face to a .223. How far off if any will my head space be once I put the new bolt head in? I realized I forgot my .223 bolt head after I drove the 2 hour drive. Needless to say, I was pretty bummed.

Re: quick! savage bolt head swap question

Ok heres what I have.... I just swapped bolt heads. Im using a once fired casing right now to head space. The smith told me that i should get a slight ring on the neck and it should be a tight fit since im swapping to a ACK cartridge. I closed the bolt with a casing and its snug. I then put a piece of paper behind the back of the shell an it gets alot snugger but still closes. I believe its extremely close. 223 ACK should be between .002 -.006. I believe im there.

I think you are GTG. stick the barrel out the door and let one rip. look at the case if it looks GTG take it to the range.

Re: quick! savage bolt head swap question

if you have a sized case that is empty, fill it with jb weld or marine-tex then use it for the head space (go) screw in the barrel until it is a little snug. Then take 1 piece of scotch tape and put it on the rear of the casing between the casing and bolt head and it should not close more than 1/3 of the way down with out forcing it.

I have not used a no go gauge in a while but I always use a go gauge!
