Im currently in the process of a silent plinker project, using a ruger charger.

I've already polished the hell out of the inside on the action, and the bolt itself, and i've ordered a polymer buffer.

(i'm mounting a 4" Hidesertdog threaded barrel, and adding a Silencerco Sparrow suppressor)

Is there anything else i can do to make the action more quiet?
(specifically the bolt slap forward)

The buffer will be huge. Maybe a lighter action spring? But, you need a certain amount of pressure to make sure the bolt comes into full battery.

Re: quieting down the 10/22 action cycle?

The bad news is the guy who makes the JG Bolt Lock is having some health problems so none are available at the moment.

The good news is there are other similar devices available. Neither is as elegant as the JG but they accomplish the same purpose. The others both are just a magnetic gizmo that fits in the ejection port and sticks to the bolt, physically blocking charging handle from moving under recoil. And they obviously have to be physically removed in order to manually cycle the bolt and load the next round.

TBA Suppressors makes one and Urban Rifle Supply makes the other. I have one of each (sorry, you've caught me before I could prepare a proper review) and the only material difference is what you have to do to cycle the bolt between shots.

The URS gizmo's ear sticks out at the rear of the ejection port. What works best for me is to pinch the ear with my thumb and forefinger, pull it out and cycle the charging handle with the other three fingers. You have to kind of fiddle to get it back in.

The TBA device is kinda clever because it's ear sticks out at a bit of an angle next to the charging handle. When you pinch the ear and the charging handle together, it also extracts the gizmo from the ejection port. Pinch, cycle, push in with the knuckle of your thumb and you're ready to fire again. It's almost as easy and clean as manipulating a bolt. URS's disclaimer says only to use CB ammo to prevent the device battering and damaging the receiver.

The URS gizmo doesn't require any fitting. The TBA gizmo is deliberately left too long so you can't install it without altering their design ...which probably is why they didn't feel the need for any disclaimer. Their destructions say to trim its length to fit but they fail to mention they also could be too tall. Mine was and I dang near ruined it before I figured that out.

The URS is $19. The TBA is $25. There's not $6 difference in them but I'd sooner have the TBA.

Good info Fred, seems the URS is useless if you have to fire CB's anyway,a CB Long will not function mine. Can't speak for others.

The TBA looks interesting though.Disappointing news about the JG bolt lock.

His name is Tom Wheeler. He and I crossed paths in another gun forum. He said the health problem had temporarily cost him use of his arms, which prevented him even answering E-mails, but he was gradually improving. I didn't press the issue but he obviously held out hope he would recover, which gave me to believe it was something like Guillain–Barré Syndrome. Anyway, under the circumstances, I think you'd agree it should be left with Tom so long as he has hope of recovering.

I'm hoping he'll soon return to FMC and be able to pay some of what must be a mass of medical bills by catching up on his backlog of orders.

I spoke to the guy at URS and he said the reason for the advisory was the potential for frame battery. However, mechanically, there's absolutely no difference in the way the two work so I think URS's advisory is just lawyer-speak. If either device is crudely fitted, there's bound to be some frame battering. But since you can't use the TBA device without modifying it, they dodge liability. In any case, I shoot 60-gr Aguilas almost exclusively in my 10/22 and don't intend switching when I use either of the bolt locks.

Over a decade ago, ole Walt Birdsong (RIP) @ Black-T in Florence, MS, was lining the inside of the receiver and the outside of the bolt with neoprene, I believe, to eliminate action noise...

Re: quieting down the 10/22 action cycle?

Regardless of what you do, it will still be a noisy action. I have had 2, for my can and have never been totally happy with the 10,22 as a host. I do have one with an integral can, and although it is a bit less noisy, the cz or savage with the bolt usually get the nod.

Do you have a link for these ?

Re: quieting down the 10/22 action cycle?

bed liner the outside with a few coats maybe. but when it closes metal on metal. steel on aluminum is quieter in the tac sol, but still. to insulate further from noise only a coating is left really. and cover the port somehow
