I know lots of people here shoot this gun so I hope someone here has already tried this bullet in a R5 Milspec 308. I shoot SMK 175s just fine however I want to try the 178 A-MAX. But when I went to get them the box says 1-10 twist, R5 is 1-11.

So has anyone already tried the 178 A-MAX bullet and had success with a R5 Milspec 308? I would think it would be OK but wanted to ask first.

Thanks

yes use the same charge weight data that you have for the 175 SMK, but the AMAX is longer than the SMK so you may need to adjust your seating depth.

I'm doing just fine with a 1:12 twist, both SMKs and A-Maxes.

The potential for trouble doesn't arise above something like 0 degrees F, and most likely at less than 1,000 ft ASL.

I don't think these things are much longer than the old 173-grain M118 bullets, which were fired out of M14s at 1,000-yard ranges all over the world for decades, with no stability problems at all.

178 AMAX should shoot just fine out of your 5R. Buddy was doing load development on Thursday (only had 3 of each charge weight loaded, just looking for pressure signs mainly) and found his sweet spot it would seem:

Unfortunately, it's only 3 shots so according to forum rules this target doesn't exist.

Just curious what that load was and was it in a R5? I am about to go to the range today and test a few I loaded last night. I am most curious about the COAL. I am working up like norml but just wanted to know what others had success with.

There's no such thing as an R5, so I guess the answer to that question is no.

Remington DOES, however, make a model called the 5R, in reference to the rifling in the barrel, and yes, that's what he used.

I don't know his throat length, although since it's a factory Remington I'm going to venture a wild-assed guess that it's longer than all fucking hell, probably .075" or so longer than magazine length.

I also don't know what the load was, as I wasn't in his house when he loaded it. I just know he was testing 178 AMAX projectiles with various powders and charge weights.

Pretty sure it was RL-15 though, as he's come to realize (as have I) that Varget is absolute dogshit if you don't live in southern California where the weather is the same all year.
