I've got a 700 long action and recently put in a pst-026 stock. When closing the bolt the handle hits the stock at the lower rear of the cutout on the stock and prevents the bolt from closing all the way. I shaved perhaps 1mm of material from the stock and shimmed the recoil lug forward with a thin piece of plastic temporarily.

I read up and it seems there are different OE bolt handle shapes from remington. I had to grind a bit of material from the trigger well also as the remington trigger didn't fit in the stock(the pivot point of the safety was touching).

Any harm if I dremel 2-3mm for my bolt handle so I can remove the shim? I can't imagine so but I can't imagine why my box stock rifle doesn't fit in the stock either, so I just want to be sure.

I got the stock used, no idea about its history or age other than it's in excellent condition with no visible work done to it, not even previously bedded. Bottom metal and everything fits perfect. The rifle is a box stock adl I bought new in 2011.

Curious if there was a change in the remington trigger and/or bolt handle design over time?

Post a pic, I wonder if the stock is cut for a straight bolt handle rather than a swept handle
**I also see on the HS site that it specifically states that it will not accept J Lock bolts, I'm not positive what the differences in geometry might be but that could be your problem. I have an HS 5r stock (long action) that I might be interested in working a trade with if you'd like, not sure about J Lock fitting in it either but if it's a matter of the bolt handle mine fits a swept handle and I'd like one for a straight handle

No J lock on the rifle. Action and bolt look like basic remington parts to me, but I surely haven't seen everything.

The stock looks identical to all the pictures I can find except for the trigger well. Compared to the pictures I can find online mine has less material milled away in the trigger opening. The small corner I removed isn't even present in any pictures I can find online. ie online pictures show a larger trigger opening than mine had.

I measured the shim, it's just under 1mm thick. I'm just going to sand that 1mm from the bolt recess, it will barely break through the gel coat.

Just curious, I would be pissed if I bought this new and had these issues! I looked but could find a side-by-side picture of the straight and swept bolt handles, anybody have one? I would consider mine to be swept because its not straight to the end.....

My attempt to post a picture. You can see the small sliver of rough epoxy I shaved smooth in the handle recess.

Does the action looks cocked in the stock? I have had 2 rifle I put into H/S Stocks and the area around the Safety lever needed to be filed out to get the action to sit straight, Maybe thats causing it to sit funny.

Check it out, just my 2 cents

Ruger: that was the problem with the safety I mentioned, I dremeled it to fit and no issues. The bolt handle is not related.

Obviously something changed over time because the safety lever wasn't even close to fitting inside the stock.

Done. A light shave with the dremel took maybe 1mm off and I cleaned it up with sandpaper wrapped around a Popsicle stick. It looks like the mold was off, like the entire bolt handle recess was moved forward about 3mm.

Oh well, can't complain at the price I got it for!
