Gunsmithing R700 dented case mouth

If it is from too much spring tension causing the plunger to push the case against the chamber you could push out the keeper pin in the bolt for the ejector and remove the spring, cut off a coil or 2 and replace. See if that will help. If you cut off too much a new spring is only a 2 bucks usually. It might do the trick.

Look on your windage turret for little brass marks. It probably hitting on extraction. I doubt its being done just from coming out of the chamber.

At any rate I value positive extraction over a little neck dings anyday. That's why sizing dies have expanding balls and mandrels.

+1 on what Rprecision said

Upon extraction just going from the chamber to sliding out of the counterbore and inside of the action there isnt enough force to deform the case mouth. Most of the time it is hitting the windage knob on the scope. cycle the bolt slow with a piece of brass and watch how it comes out, that should show/tell you where your problem lies. If it was me I wouldnt worry to much about it.

I load lapua brass so I never throw them out. I extract them slowly and grab them. Definitely not hitting anything. The extractor is definitely pushing very hard when I did some tests. I imagine the warm/softer brass will dent more easily. Thanks for all the input guys

Perhaps I don't understand but ... extraction is performed by the extractor, a sort of hook that fits into the case extractor groove. The device that is pushing hard on the OPs case is the ejector plunger in the bolt face opposite the ejection port. There is no advantage to having your brass thrown a long way - or bent. Does a strong ejector spring help with extraction? I cut down and stone all of my ejector springs. When prone and I operate the bolt briskly, the brass lands in a pile about 18-inches and slightly to the rear of the ejection port. If I operate the bolt slowly, I can push it to the rear with the heel of my hand and catch the brass with my fingers. I have never had an extraction issue and I can usually find my brass pretty quickly.
