Gunsmithing R700 feeding problem

OK, so I've about had it with this. I've had my R700 since last October and I've been trying to figure this out. I hadn't shot it in a while so I forgot all about it, but just shot it this weekend and I think I remember why I quit shooting it. I've tried all the easy stuff, but this doesn't seem like a problem that is commonly talked about.

Occasionally the first, and almost always the 2nd rounds out of the magazine won't feed. The base of the round won't rise up enough for the bolt to catch on them. The front will come up, but the rear/base won't. I even have to fidget with the round to get it to come up because just the bolt riding over it one time won't break it loose so it will come up; sometimes it takes a great deal of fidgeting to get it to come up. That is what I don't understand, you'd think that if it was that big of a problem it would be obvious, but there isn't an obvious cause. Does anybody have any recommendations for a fix?

There are no burrs, edges, or abnormalities that I can see that would cause this. The spring seems to be plenty strong, the box is firmly inserted into the recess.

Looks like a BDL, correct?

Check and see if the mag box is pinched in the center. If it is un-pinch it and straighten it out. If the box is pinched in the center it can drag the follower.

If that doesn’t work replace the spring. Stretching a flat spring just doesn’t last and with the Remington spring and the bends that it has if they are not just right you will have feeding issues just like you are experiencing.

Yes, BDL. The mag box isn't pinched, I checked that. The follower is free and has plenty of room. A person on Arfcom mentioned that the rear of the mag box should be flared out. I know some magazines are flared out at the rear, but I just assumed that the 308 is straight on the rear. Am I correct? or should it be flared out? I don't believe it is, I'll check sometime this weekend.

Re: R700 feeding problem

Happens to my sps too. The bolt goes right over the rounds in the mag.

Bending the rear of the spring under the follower helped slightly. Loading them into the mag just right helps even more. If it screws me again in the field its getting solved. For now I'm too busy to worry about my own rifle.

Not sure what they mean by that but the box will angle in near the top but more so towards the front. At the rear it still angles in but not as much. This is to get the rounds more towards the center so the feed lips can guide the round.

I would replace the spring.

That sounds accurate, and true to my rifle. I guess I'll call Remington and see if they'll send me a new mag spring.
