I'll be acquiring a pup soon and need to build a raised kennel with a dog box on the back to keep him in while I'm at work. The rest of the time, he'll be free to run the yard. So my idea is to build a scott's type kennel, however, the part I'm hung up on is what to do about the flooring.

Taking into account that a puppies paws are smaller, i need to have a flooring that will cater to this, but also allow the mess to fall through.

I was looking at these panels: PolyMax Overlapping Poultry/Kennel Flooring - FarmTek

But I've also looked at pvc coated welded wire, but the spacing on that is either 1/2" or 1", i think those are either too small or too big and there's not an in between. Also, not sure how rough that would be on their paws.

And, I've thought about using 1x2 cedar boards and spacing them approx 3/4" apart.

So what are your guy's thoughts experiences, etc.

Having trained pups for over 20 years...
Puppy should not be left alone all day
Crate training is effective when the pup will not eliminate in the crate. Generally puppies need to be let out every 3-4 hours during this critical period. If the puppy learns to eliminate waste in the crate, they may have big problems down the road in house training etc.
Is there no one to let the pup out during the day?

I built an outside kennel for my dogs (Both Adult Boxers)

I started with 12x12 concrete pavers and did a square of the 13 of them.. made for a pretty large area. Enclosed by a 12X12 fencing with a top.

I covered the inside with sand to fill in the pavers and then put the black horse stable rubber mats down to cover that.

The top of the kennel has a UV protecting plastic tarp over it from Lowes..

I have some toys in there... and Igloo house incase it rains... and a HUGE bucket of water.

If you need pics.. I can upload some later...

I think the total cost was under $1K and took about 4 hours to put it all up and have them in it. THEY LOVE IT!

I would advise against getting a pup if you cannot crate train and let them out every few hours like fx77 said. I have crate trained my dogs from pups properly and they worked out great, I know people that have not and keep the pup inside for longer than 3-4 hours and they end up having a really hard time house breaking them after. The kennel/crate is what they will learn to consider their "home", if they end up going to the bathroom inside their "home" that is a trend they will keep while they learn that your house is their "home" as well.

Just a my thoughts.
