RamShot Tac?

Has anyone been using this powder?
I have RL15, Varget and H4895 on hand among others so I am not hurting for powder or loads to play with, but this powder sounds interesting in one way.
In the thread about the best powder for a 175gr SMK a poster said that Tac meters very well. Ramshot says that Tac is a spherical powder, so it makes sense that it would be accurate through a measure.

Is there any reason to avoid spherical powder in a .308?
Are spherical powders more consistent, less consistent than extruded powders, or is there any difference?

The idea of a good, consistent accurate powder that meters well without needing to trickle the last few tenths of the charge sounds good.
But- the key is accuracy. Is this powder capable of producing little itty bitty tine groups?

Re: RamShot Tac

Thank you. That's what I was thinking, but wishing is free.
I also wish for a resizing die that didn't need lube and cases that didn't stretch so i could load match ammo as quickly as I do .45acp.
Alternatively a case lube that evaporated on the downstroke.

I guess if someone invented those we would burn our barrels out sooner, but hey- I have a Savage so it isn't a problem!

Re: RamShot Tac

I get great results with several ball powders in .223 so I might try some TAC when I run low on the others.

I get itty bitty groups in .308 with Varget or RL-15 over BR-2 primers driving 168s and 175s...YMMV.

Re: RamShot Tac

Midway just had it on sale for 12.99 per lb... so I bought 10 (their limit). Came out to $165 for 10lbs which is cheaper than I can generally find powder for locally. I think I'll stick to varget for my 308; however, I intend to use the TAC in some LC brass with a 75gr HPBT on top for my AR... hopefully it will work nicely. I got it with intentions of being able to load using a powder drop without having to trickle / hand measure.

I just bought another 10lbs from midway also. I've been running hornady and privi 75s over 24.4 grains in my lmt.

Re: RamShot Tac

TAC is a great powder. I use it for a lot of my 223 loads. It will meter very well through a powder dispenser on a progressive. Like all spherical/ball powders, they will show more temperature variance than an extruded powder from hot and cold temps. So keep this in mind. It still would be a good powder for the 308.

On your die requests, they make carbine 308 dies. They still require some lube, though. So a carbide die vs. a standard die won't matter. You can always tumble the loaded rounds to remove the lube. I do this with my 223 ammo.

You can get good speed on a pregressive press, but you will give up some consistancy from load to load for match ammo. So, weigh you options on what you would rather have.

Re: RamShot Tac

TAC did very well in my 308 with 175 Bergers, but I run a lot more Big Game the next step slower. Great results with the 155's, and the only powder I run anymore in my 8 twist 22-250. I'll also be trying Big Game in my short barrel 6.5x47L. I did run some Exterminator the next faster burn rate in a 223 that I previously owned. with 52gr bergers that rifle gave me an ES of 3 over a 10 shot string I'd call that consistent.

Good to know other's are having success. That sale is supposed to continue at midway until the 31st of this month, so I should have time to get my first batch of powder from them and run some tests. If I like it, I'll definitely order more at that price (especially with people reporting success using it for the 308 also).

Re: RamShot Tac

We have one of our jrs shooting TAC in a 308 palma gun at 1,000 and his first trip out he shot mid to upper 180s and into the low 190s on a string. We use sling and irons not benches, but thats still pretty good performance (X is 10 inches, 10 ring is 20 inches) and if you arent shooting benchrest, you probably arent going to see a difference.

Re: RamShot Tac

While I am not the best shot or reloader, I like TAC. You may be refering to my post about it metering well.
I shot with my brother(Nashlaw) last week, wish I kept the target but I didnt. Cold Bore shot was 1/2 inch to right of group. I shot a 13 round group (counting cold bore). I did push 1 down about 1/2" from the main group. It was all me and I knew I did it when I pulled the trigger. Anyway, the other 11 where in about a 3/4MOA ragged hole of a group.
Now, I do get a little tighter groups when I run RE15 and still a bit tighter than that with Varget.

One thing about that group is that I usually have no cold bore deviation at all. The gun is a KMW, and has shot many cold bore groups with no deveiation.

On another note, before that cold bore was shot, I shot about 3 days before that but all with supressor. That is a theory on the Cold Bore being off as well (to some).

Also, I dont clean my gun. Have around 300 rounds thru it now since last cleaning. Should be good for at least another 200 or so.

Stickland, how fast does this run for you?

Re: RamShot Tac

It's running right around 2650fps if I remember correctly. I have shot that load out to 1000yards @ the AEDC matches here locally.
I dont have a chrono, I will look and see if I have the velocity somewhere. I believe me and BansheeSWS chrono'd that round.

Let me look.

Barrel is a 22" Kreiger by the way.
