It works and in 1959 for the 7.62X51 ammo it was right.
Are there better today yes but the standard FS is what is issue. You can change it ir you want on your rifle to make it fit your needs.
Just a note the Army keeps them cause if aint broke......

I'm sure there are differences of opinions on this but I have used various length barrels on my M14's with Springfield and Smith Enterprise muzzle devices and the most accurate any one of my rifles has been is my current 18.5" barrel with a National Match reamed GI flashider. Most likely I will rebarrel this winter with a 22" Kreiger and keep that flashider.
