Sidearms & Scatterguns Random question? Hk Usp vs Springfield 1911

Re: Random question? Hk Usp vs Springfield 1911

Both are, and both aren't.

I like them both for different reasons. And both excel at each other disadvantages(Cons in my personal opinion).

If you're looking to buy one then rent them from a gun range first and see which one you like before you buy them.

Also be brutally honest with yourself when you consider your own needs for each one.

Re: Random question? Hk Usp vs Springfield 1911

I have owned both pistols. I had a USP tactical in .45 and a older Springfield Armory "loaded" 1911.

***I agree with Armaheavy, you really need to shoot each of them to see which suits your shooting needs best.***

Here is some of my experience with the USP.
The USP was a reliable and accurate pistol, but with the safety/decocker on my version and the way I grip a pistol I had a tendancy to decock the hammer when my strong hand thumb rested on the lever. Also the bore axis is a little bit higher than a 1911 so when I shot the pistol it sent an uncomfortable recoil impulse into my wrist, although it was tolerable.
I sold the USP mainly because I shoot my 1911 more consistently and more often and I couldnt justify having a pistol that I wouldnt shoot and enjoy.

I personally dont think you could go wrong with either, hope this helps and good luck with your decision.

Re: Random question? Hk Usp vs Springfield 1911

Go shoot them, I have the USP 9mm and USP .45 tactical, I also have two 1911's I like each in their own way. I have the USP versions with the decocker and find myself decocking the HKs when I don't want to.

Re: Random question? Hk Usp vs Springfield 1911

If you have issues with decocking the USP, I'd go with the 1911, especially since you already have 1911s. I'd opt for the Springfield Operator Loaded, then, if I wanted it worked, have their custom shop do the work. Though, personally, I'm able to do most of my own work. but by buying the loaded version, you have the option of sending it to springfield for a different finish or getting the front strap checkered in a different grade rather than the standard 20lpi.

Just my opinion.

Re: Random question? Hk Usp vs Springfield 1911

I have a USP40 V1, and a USP45 LEM, and use to have a SA GI1911. The only reason I sold the 1911 was because of an issue that was isolated on that particular gun. I dont attribute this issue to all 1911s, just that particular gun. Given the opportunity, I have zero issues getting another one.

1911 Pros
Excellent/ natural feel, it just fits
Very accurate
Huge aftermarket
Easily concealable
Various bbl lengths
Acceptable range of prices from cheap and affordable to "my wife wants a divorce now".

1911 Cons (most are correctable)
Limited magazine cap (7-8 rounds)
All steel frames are a bit heavy for CC
Some can be the pick of the litter as to any issues you may have.
Some are picky on the ammo/mags used

USP Pros
Accurate, but not as accurate as a 1911
Reliably shoots any ammo you feed it
Higher mag cap
Many available configurations (V1, V2, LEM...ect)
Very comfortable to handle

USP Cons
Not great for CC if you are a small person
Small hands find the USP45 to be a bit chubby
Expensive mags
A fully loaded USP probably weights as much or more as 1911, especially in .45.

Re: Random question? Hk Usp vs Springfield 1911

To answer this question one must delve deep inside their own soul. Well, maybe not that deep. We can type away and fill pages with technical discourse on the pros and cons of each of these weapons. The only way to truly answer the question is to get familiar with both, figure out what role it will fill, and buy the gun.

If you read enough threads like this you will see a trend. 1911's can be simply finicky do a downright pain in the ass. Magazines issues, ammo feeding, cheap internal parts, etc., etc.

My first pistol was a USPc 9mm and I loved that gun. Gave it up un a trade and I'm still mad at myself. Out of the box a USP will feed and fire anything you give it. Don't feel like cleaning it after a trip to the range? No worries. There were several occasions where I had multiple trips to the range without cleaning and I was still confident enough to carry it.

If the it doesn't feel right in your hands or you have problems with the decock lever by all means walk away. But if it feels right go for the USP.

Be careful the 1911 addiction is an expensive one. Started with springfields ans SW's and quickly ammassed a collection wilsons and guncrafters within a few yrs. I carry a usp on duty...but not by choice. Once you train with a 1911 nothing else will compare to its speed and accuracy.

Re: Random question? Hk Usp vs Springfield 1911

Buy the SA basic 1911 with high profile fixed or adj sights, don't have to be Novak design, just something better than standard notch & blade govt model.

The money you've saved will pay for a Kart barrel kit and a Cylinder & Slide sear spring. Maybe you also want a HD Wolff spring kit so you can shoot .45 Super loads?

1911 is the ticket for all the available gear and options. Colt, Kimber, S&W, or SA guns are better choice for frame strength.

The Kart barrel matched set is a tremendous value.

This is what I mean. Don't get me wrong, someday I want a 1911. But I don't have the time, patience, or cash for a barrel and a cylinder and slide kit for this and kit for that. I barely have time to shoot as it is.

Re: Random question? Hk Usp vs Springfield 1911

I've owned both the Springfield 1911 and the HK USP45. I still have the 1911. The HK was traded a couple years back. While the USP isn't a bad weapon, the DA trigger pull is a bit ugly, the pistol is bulky, and I didn't like the special rail adapter for a light. Get the Springfield 1911 and don't look back.

Re: Random question? Hk Usp vs Springfield 1911

Just my experience,

I have had more failures to feed with my 1911's then I have from my USP, for example had a box of Cor-Bon hollow points with the very wide hollow profile and these wouldn't even chamber in my 1911. Throw them in my USP and no problem. I'm sure most ammo is fine but I have never had an issue with anything I feed my USP.... Just saying.
All though I still own 2 1911's and the USP and love them all

Re: Random question? Hk Usp vs Springfield 1911

had a USP9 full size v1 and a springfield loaded stainless 1911 sold the Hk because i couldn tget used to the trigger being DA it had a mile of slack in takeup when in SA mode while the 1911 being a straight Single action gun was much more consistent. that said id recoomend both because the HK was bulletproof and there are people who play with the triggers now.

Re: Random question? Hk Usp vs Springfield 1911

A good 1911 is just as reliable as the HK. I have a SACS Pro Operator that hasn't been cleaned in probably 900-1000 rounds. Never a problem with it either. The only maintience I have done to it thus far is unlock the barrel and put a drop of oil in there, and a couple of drops of oil on the slide rails.

Comparing a USP to a Milspec is an apples to oranges comparison. A 1911 set up right is not finnicky nor sensitive to all these failures people like to talk up. I personally cannot stand a USP or any of the HK variants. They fit my hand about like a 2x4 and the bore height is way to much for my shooting style. Given the choice I will go with a 1911 over anything HK any day of the week and twice on Sundays

Re: Random question? Hk Usp vs Springfield 1911

Just get both of them. I love USPs and the newer HK45. If you want a 1911, you have to dedicate yourself to it. It's a demanding pistol to own and maintain if you want to shoot it much.
