Well I finally got out to AGC on Friday with my new plinker and 8 different types of .22LR

I started out at 25 yards and got it on paper with the Remington 525 bulk pack ammo. It wasn't too cold out but there was enough wind that it was cracking the flag at times. I tried to shoot when it was gusting but that didn't always work out.

When I started testing the different ammo I moved the target out to 50 yards. I started in the upper right corner with the Remington 525 bulk pack since I had the most of that. I shot the first round and then adjusted the scope some for the second round that was closer to center.

I fired 10 rounds of each of the different ammo with out adjusting the scope so I could see where it shot in relation to the Remington 525. I got good groups out of the Wolf Match Extra, RWS Subsonic and the Remington Eley LTD. I had to laugh at one ammo. I bought a box of Aguila 20 gr gunpowderless ammo. At 50 yards it didn't even break the paper. I saw one round bounce off the target. So the holes near the target for that ammo is more of the Remington Eley LTD.

The Federal Gold Match was almost dead on with the Remington bulk pack followed next by the CCI Mini Mags. Everything else shot low and left compared to the Remington bulk pack.

I would also try CCI Standard Velocity 22 Long Rifle Lead Round Nose Target. 40gr at 1070fps per the box, which is dark blue with red and white inscriptions. I find it to be functionally identical to FGMM in my guns and significantly less expensive.

If you're going to shoot for groups with different brands of ammunition, you really need to shoot at least 10rds of that ammo (to season the barrel) before shooting for groups. Don't know if you did that but it's specific to 22lr's.

Re: Range Report: Savage MKII TR

Nice write up. Using the different ammo provides for a good assesment of what to expect in the way of performance. I am going to have to try the 10 round seasoning of the barrel with each brand and see what results I get. Did you clean the rifle or punch the bore between brands? What is your feedback on how it fit and functioned? Was the cheekpad to get a better stock weld? Also what is the scope height? That is the first picture I have seen up close on the bolt knob, which appears to be a nice touch on Savage's part. Thank you again and look forward to future range reports as the weather warms up.

Looks like a BLACKHAWK.

BLACKHAWK IVS Performance Cheek Pad </div></div>
Correct. That is the cheek pad.

I really like it so far. I want to take it out to 100 yards on the next trip to the range.

No I didn't clean in between.

Well I am not a professional shooter in any way so I would just have to say that is was comfortable to shoot and it went bang when I pulled the trigger. I am pleased with the feel of the Accutrigger. It is very smooth.

Just a personal preference for me plus it adds a pocket for a note book, pen and even a small amount of ammo.

Not sure. They are low rings on a 20moa base from EGW

Re: Range Report: Savage MKII TR

I'm not trying to be a penis-wrinkle here, but the groups don't look all that impressive! I took mine out last week and was getting 5 shot groups that were one ragged hole, some stringing horizontally and some vertical.

One group started out with the first 3 in the same hole, of course then I fucked it up. This was with Wolf Match @ 50yds off of bipod and rear rest. I'm going to try to do some shooting this Sunday after my clubs bowling pin match. I'll try to get pics....I know it ain't shit if ya can't back it up!

This little rifles really are the cats ass though, I love mine!

Re: Range Report: Savage MKII TR

No worries. There was flag cracking wind gusts and I am not that good a shot.

I just like to go out and have fun. Don't shoot for a living or I would go broke.

Maybe with some more practice I can get one hole too.

Re: Range Report: Savage MKII TR

With the .22LR, the major portion of the prime accuracy is going to come from the ammunition. The rest is execution. As long as the rifle is essentially unflawed, it's doing its job.

While absolute accuracy is satisfying and can be useful in some circumstances, I consider the 'absolute' part to be secondary to the exercise. The primary issues are consistency and comparative accuracy.

The measure of the shooter's peformance is in the consistency and improvement. The .22LR's key value here is in how it reduces the external influences, and tells the shooter, "Hey, you're doing it right today", or "Hey, something's wrong with your technique today". The message is clear, uncomplicated, and reliable.

For this, absolute accuracy is only marginally helpful, and can actually become somewhat of a distraction.

There has to be some way of knowing when improvement is there. If that accuracy improvement can only be measured with a micrometer, maybe the process can become fraught with frustration and doubts ("Hey, was that 1/16" improvement me, or something else?"). A little room for improvement, especially if it can be readily seen through a riflescope, may be a good thing.

If you have to chase something, chase the skills, and not the decimals. That's BR, and it's different from what most of us do here.

Re: Range Report: Savage MKII TR

I will have one by midweek TP I was gonna go this A.M. but it started pouring the rain and blowing pretty good as i was walking out the door. Not sure if I'll get to 200 as I'm going to be trying a few different brands of ammo. but I hope to get to 200 by the weekend

Re: Range Report: Savage MKII TR

Yep I'm about 45 miles east of Erie Pa. and between the weather and some jackass plowing snow in front of the range road I have only been able to shoot it indoors @ 50 ft so I can't wait to see what it does @ 100-200 yds. But from first impression she should be lights out.
