Gunsmithing range rods??

I see references to range rods used for centering barrels. Are you just using a cleaning rod? The bore is bigger than the rod so the rod can slide through, right, so do you tape the rod to build up the diameter of the rod so it is a snug fit to the barrel? I guess can someone fill me in here. Pics are very helpful.

The end that goes in first has removable pilots. You fit the tightest pilot to the bore and then slide it in. The rod itself has a very long taper, which as you slide the piloted end in, the taper will eventually center and stop inside the bore. You then use two dial indicators to align the bore in a four jaw chuck. This insures that the bore is straight.
