True, the master does make ranging ridiculously easier. However, you really should know and use the laborious equation before using the master. The master should be used to make life easier, not as a crutch to be relied upon. Ranging is not my forte, and the equation is still not second nature to me, but I will not use the master until I have mastered the math.
10 years ago, when I used to fly, we used a flight computer called an E6B. It looks like a ruler with a round compass/protractor in the center, and is similar to the mildot master in functionality. This was the basic tool to use in flight planning and in-flight calculations. I also had a digital version of the E6B, which looked like a calculator and was so much easier to use. However, I was not allowed to get licensed until I could demonstrate proficiency with the slide rule version. It was laborious and I hated using it, but I would be up shit's creek if I didn't know how to use the slide rule and my digital E6B died on me while in-flight.
This also holds true in multiple facets of medicine. What if I am at a hospital with a crappy budget? Don't ever rely on technology for doing anything without understanding the archaic methodology first.
