1st, when you need to see the chiropracter it takes between 10 to 14 days to get in, thats fucking stupid, FUCKING STUPID.
i cant walk and i feel like like i have something sticking out of my back... 10 DAYS?????????
i havent seen the doc in a while because as i waite for the appointment, my back will pop somewhat in and i cancel the appointment and carry on.
i call the other day to see the chiropracter that i have been using for 4 years and they say i need to be referred from my primary, call primary and they schedule me an appointment w him to see if they can get me an appointment w the chiropracter, dude, in 8 days, 8 DAYS, then i will have to waite in line for the chiropracter.
i tell mr smug dick sucker that i fucking hurt, not a little, im no candyass, fucker gives me the line, bla bla bla bla bla.

I’m not familiar with the VA but I know when my back goes out I drive my ass to the chiropractor and walk in. Cost me $35. Don’t even mess with insurance. In and out in 15 minutes.

The point is that he should NOT have to do that. He was not able to tell Command to get someone else for that ruck march, deployment, watch, etc etc. Contracts that are not upheld to by BOTH parties is a breach of contract and the VA breaches their side of our contracts on a daily basis.

I'm sorry our 'system' is letting yet another warrior down Brother. This is just ONE reason I failed to give my two studs my blessing to sign up. I'm as Red, White, and Blue as the next guy, put in a good solid 10 fucking years. Got my salad bar and the obligatory cup of coffee at the corner five and dime and moved on. i have a contract w the gov to give me medical care, i gave them my youth and they are supposed to give me medical care.
when i enlisted in 85, the contract was for free care after i served...
that changed, now they charge per your income, and put you so far out you either want to die or get civie help like today...i wish i could change up on contracts halfway through, fuckin pricks...
dont get me wrong, the doctors, staff everything is cool, except the admin, nobody cares, they say they do, but i know they dont...

I talked with an admin scheduler a while back. I needed an appointment for my hands.
I'll just put it this way, if he was one of my employees and he talked to customers like that, I would have fired his ass on the spot.
Next time, just roll up into the ER and they will have you an appointment next day. You just have to play their fucking games.

Our VA system is fucked up, it has been for decades now. I'm a vet, but have yet to ever deal with VA health care. I'm sure my time will come. The current President says he will fix it, and take care of us, but that is yet to be seen.
There is nothing I can do to make anything better for you Brother.
Hopefully some day this country will return to what we all wish it can be, for us as we grow older, for our children, and our grandchildren, and generations to come.

I agrees. The way to fix it is for there to be no VA to go to. Instead veterans just go to the dr of their choice and submit all bills to the government. This would actually be cheaper for the government as well because their vetted doctors wouldn't be screwing them and everyone else.

Also I should add, make as many friends as you can. Not enemies.
I have ALL my providers personal cell phone numbers. I start off by telling them something like "I really appreciate you helping me, sometimes I feel you are the only one who really cares." If they are human they take the compliment and realize you are a person too. Later I ask for their work phone extension. If I get pushback from the new guy up front I just call their phone directly and ask for an appt to be made. I tell them I'm up front and the jerk at the deskmwont help. Later as I develop more of a friendship I excange numbers and I just txt them if anyone is fucking w me.

May 2017, I'm in the Tucson VA coming out of a heart attack. They were all fubar'ed over giving me testing that required fasting. It was going 2PM, I was still completely ravenous, and the Dear Docs still couldn't decide which test to give me.
My Wife called me. I told her.
Ten minutes later, literally crowds of caregivers started gathering in my room. They were all grovelling, and assuring me that this was a bad mistake.
Somewhere in the middle of all this lunch appeared. They never give me the so called 'necessary tests'.
My Wife had called the Patient Advocate and related the issue in a way that only a 30 year customer service rep can do.
Apparently, this also fast tracked me for early discharge. Fine by me, I'm still kickin' stuff an' takin' names; my care since has been stellar.
For yourself:
1. Going to the clinic for an emergent condition is a mistake. Go to urgent care, and be vocal. Roll on the floor if you need to to get them to take you seriously.
1a. You had an emergency. When you call up the VA, the first thing they say is to hang up and dial 911 for emergencies. Do it. If you can drive yourself to that local ER, do it. I'm 100%, the only card I give them is my VA card. It got me in and treated even before I got 100%. Saved my life with a 'terminal' heart attack in 2004.
2. Any issue at all with attitudes, efficacy of care, or obvious foot dragging, go find the patient advocate, in person if possible. Things will change. You'll probably never catch them at it it, but they do walk on water.
3. Going to an appointment; bring a good book. Even good care takes time at the VA. Treat your caregivers the way you'd like them to treat you. That actually works.
...Except in Phoenix, or so's I'm told...; my VA is Tucson, one of the best by local reputation, they all vary by the same way their directors vary, some are schmucks. Same with other things too. Believe me, the rank and file want to help you, but policy can be a bitch, and for that, talk to your Congresscritter, they're the real wrenches in the works.
For example, my Brother has the same AO bullshit I have, but he got his exposure at Ft. McClellan, and the VA can't touch him. Legislation authorizing it has been stuck in the Senate for going on nine years now. He's on oxygen now, with wrecked knees that are inoperable due to his, like mine, AO heart condition. I just hope he's got another year left in him, he's a terrific guy.
Now, do you get it?

I don't want to hyjack this thread but I have to ask. I go to a local VA clinic, I am almost 3 hours away from the VA hospital. If I feel I am having an emergency and go to the local civialian ER and show them my card will the VA pay for it? What happens if after the fact the VA deems it was not an emergency and says the ER visit was not necessary? Will I be stuck with a hug medical bill?
As I understand it, and correct me if I'm wrong, but the VA does some very good work in the specialty fields with combat injuries. Stuff not typically seen in your standard domestic hospitals.
That's their niche and it's where they should focus their efforts.
The "everyday" stuff, like the chiropractor work needed here, should be done on by the patient's chosen licensed provider and paid by the VA just like any other insurance setup.
Waiting for days to get back pain attended to is absurd. My HOT chiro will typically see me within 24 hours if I'm really hurting.

Good question. A few things have to happen for the VA to cover the ER visit. It has to be life threatening AND it has to be a service connected condition. On top of that you NEED to contact a dept called Fee Basis and make sure the ER sends them ALL the dr notes not just the bill.
I went to a private ER once. It was 2011. It was for my heart condition (service connected) but The VA rejected my claim. It took 6 years AND an inquiry from a US Senator to get cleared up. Literally the day after the Senator put in is inquiry I got a call from the VA apologizing, and a call from the ER billing dept to say the bill was paid and they would remove the account from collections.
If you have a ER visit, just go, but know it can be a bit of a pain getting paid...but better than dying.

i dont want anyone to think im all negetive on the VA, because i am not, my drs are great and just about everyone i deal w there is great to me and of course i treat everyone there as i would like to be treated, its just this chiropacter thing,

so, yesterday morning im still in bed at 8am, saw the private Dr the afternoon before but still had something out and i hurt...
VA calls...
as it stood i had an appointment to see primary to get referred to chiro in 8 days.
the call was from the Chiro office to say they were setting an appointment, numb nuts the day before said i had to see primary but this lady said it was referred, hey great i say, i have an appointment for the 18th of oct...
you read that right, the 18th, the time frame is worse than what i was suggesting above...
its not the Drs, nurses, or janitors, its the admin and bean counters...
they dont know i saw a Dr already, just sitting still i would shiver w pain, grind my teeth pain. they sure will try to get you on the pain pills tho, not ffor me, i wont do it, no way no how...
so, the administration has it that a former Marine that has bad back, nothing new to them w my case, ive had the MRIs, been seeing a Dr for my back for 5 years w them, but they think it best to put an appointment out till the 18th...

there are some changes that need to be done. i had very seriously thought about volunteering there in the evenings or drive for some of the other vets that need a lift to the hospital, i need to get back after it, we all should volunteer a little just if anything to help each other out...
Thursday a week ago, I went for my semiannual VA primary care checkup. I asked the DR to check out a lesion on my abdomen, almost certainly another (the fourth) permanent suture erupting from a 1997 cancer operation. He asked me "Do we fix this?", and I said yes, based on the other three.
A day later I got a call from the Surgical Clinic to come in (this past) Friday for a consult. So I went, expecting to be scheduled for ambulatory surgery.
When I got there, the Surgeon had my records up, and walked me through a permission sequence. Standing up, I asked him when he was going to want to schedule the procedure. He said "In about ten minutes". "From now"? "Yes, from now".
I asked him why right now. He said that my records showed I was coming up for cataract operations soon, and that the normal progression of letting the suture become infected would not be good, as that infection would almost certainly mean rescheduling the cataract operations, which would postpone that for another 6-12 months.
Half an hour later I walked out with the situation completely resolved and the girls and I went to lunch.
Complain and accuse all you want (and this is not in response to oneshot86). These are the actual facts.

Like you, I've had some pretty good treatment from our Tampa VA. The hand clinic WAS really good. That doctor has retired unfortunately.
Gonna see who I get assigned to next trip to that office.
The spine folks were hit and miss. The hit was Dr Damon Vu. He left to open his own practice and ten years later, he's still my go to guy. In fact, I'll see him next week.
Dermatology has been good and if they don't have experience or proper facilities, they refer you to private practice.
I'm lucky though, I get to choose whether I go to VA or private because my insurance covers it either way.
Mike, I feel for you brother. Being told we can see you in two weeks for something needed right effin now is complete BS. They should have referred you to private and picked up the tab.
