I recently bought a Ruger American Predator in 6.5cm. its the 5R barrel and AI style mags. Cold bore first shot is dead on everytime at 100yds, 2nd and 3rd shot are close within a minute and then my fourth shot is always of 3 or 4 MOA. I'm shooting 140grn American Gunner. Is it my ammo? is the barrel heating up throwing it off that much? Is it just breaking in? or is it something else?

Is it my ammo?
What does different ammo do?
is the barrel heating up throwing it off that much?
Give it 10 minutes in between shots and see
Is it just breaking in?
Youll know after you get it broken in
or is it something else?
It could be the above or literally anything else. We cant do the process of testing this on your behalf, youre the one with the rifle, you tell us.

I've got a pencil barreled Savage Axis .223 that does exactly the same thing. It frustrated the hell out of me until I figured out the consistency with which it was doing what it was doing. I was looking for an acceptable 5-shot group, but it wasn't capable of shooting five rounds in less than two minutes and having them print anything like what I deem acceptable. And it didn't matter what ammo I used, it shot them all the same. That was what finally dawned on me. I was looking for ammo it liked, and to me it didn't look like it liked any of them very well, but in reality it liked them all very well for the first three rounds. It just needed a rest before printing the last two if I wanted five shot groups to compare.

In contrast, my RAP .223 medium contour will go ten before it starts to walk, and with my Howa heavy it's closer to twenty.

20rds, no walking. On gravel, off bipod with bean bag, first shot was out of group from bipod settlinginto rock.
