Has anyone shot targets accurately and rapidly, from multiple positions, at multiple ranges?
For example, shooting a target 3x at 75yards offhand, then 150+ yards from some sitting position, then a target at 200-300 from prone (all within say 60secs)?
I just wanted to know techniques and processes people may go through to do something similar?

Re: Rapid bolt shooting techniques

Shoot as flat a round as possible. A .243 or one of the other fast little 6mm's at the range you're describing wont even need a hold depending on the size of the plate. I get less than a mil drop at 300 which is around 9 inches.

Don't run the bolt too hard, slamming it home can cause the firing pin to jump forward, leaving you with a dead trigger and having to run the bolt again, wasting time.

Um..don't think this should happen anyway? I run the bolt extremely hard/fast at times and I've never had this happen

+1 Might want to have that trigger looked at by someone with a clue.

+1.... something isn't right.

Re: Rapid bolt shooting techniques

Are you asking about physical techniques for physically running the bolt, like cupping the bolt handle in the 'V' of the hand on a Lee Enfield rifle, or are you asking about using the reticle for holdovers and hold unders?

I've never had it happen in my rifles, but I don't go crazy either.

I did watch it happen to 2-3 different people during the recent PMG match I worked.

I have, not good.

Re: Rapid bolt shooting techniques

IME How you manipulate the bolt is going to be somewhat determined by what kind of stock you are running. A thumbhole stock requires a different technique than a more standard prone by type that you can hold with thumb forward.

You have to try the different techniques to determine what works best for you and feels the most comfortable. Then practice, practice, practice until it becomes reflexive.

I just watched this video...great stuff. Well done by LoneWolfUSMC. I've never tried his third technique shown. But will be....

Re: Rapid bolt shooting techniques

My advice is to zero for the longest range you'll shoot and be away of hold under for closer range. That works the best for me. And for the bolt, work it like a Mosin (all in the palm).

Edit: If you are scored on rings for targets, you'll have to dial mils/moa, obviously. I was operating under the assumption the targets are a hit/miss scoring type.

Re: Rapid bolt shooting techniques

This is only for fully supported positions: fire the rifle with your none dominant hand and manipulate the bolt with your dominant. Place but of rifle in usual shoulder with a good cheek weld, this is very fast and is accurate at medium ranges with practice.
