Rather than spending $1000 + on a new .308 rifle

I have an almost new Ruger M77 .35 Whelen. Would it be worth putting a new precision 30'06 barrel in 5R rifling on this action. Would it fit the bill of all the new .308 trendy rifles? It sits in a very nice HS stock. Is the Ruger action accurate enough to put money into?

Sorry. I just noticed when looking for reples. Would the moderator move this to bolt rifles please.I was researching the CZ 452 Varmint in Rimfire and forgot to switch forums.
