Main word heard at the match this weekend was "HOT". Some loads were too hot and caused problems and others had to take out elevation to hit the targets. For those with questions about Savage Rifles, I think the top four out of five positions were shot with Savages. Both of ours are in 260 with Shilen barrels. They sure are shooters.

I put aside my LR pistol this weekend and tried my new Savage 260 rifle for the first time and set the wrong dope at my first bank of targets and getting a big ZERO for my first stage at 300 yards. The misses were so close the spotters thought it was just off to the side but was actually just missing the bottom of the target. I had in my 234 yard setting which made it .5 mil low and just missing the target. When I practice I start on the 234 and move out and even double checked I was ready but ya gotta check everything before that first shot.

I was somewhat happy with the results for my first time shooting this match with a long gun. I did manage to hit all 20 pointers at 500 and 600 which I've not been able to do with my LR Pistol which really helps to add to the score really fast. Sure does seem strange being able to see the bullet hit the target, I think I could learn to like this

64 shooters braved the hot weather and varied wind conditions to have a fun weekend shooting steel. Again my son showed me how to do it. He hadn't missed single target till the 900 and 990/1000 yard stage but the wind, haze and hard to see targets was his undoing. In the end though it's all about having a good time and learning something from each match to use next month to hopefully improve your score.

Guess it doesn't matter wether you use the pistol or rifle! Good shooting guys. I thought I woulda done a little better than I did, but after seeing those scores it was a tough match!

I don't know what the h*ll happened. All those small targets kept avoiding my bullets!

I'll try and find the name of that place that tig welds bolt handles on for ya so you can come out and do a little shootin. If you don't wanna do that, maybe take a grain or two of powder out

GoinHot, I did'nt wanna rub it in or anything!! LOL, I'm MORE than happy with the way it shot Saturday, and I really believe that it was the sole reason I picked up 75 more points than last month! Its a sweet shooting stick. Thanks again!

If you can hit a pack of smokes at 400,500,700 and 900yds, you will be in the money ? You have the chance to shoot different size targets at some of the positions for higher point values, the smaller the target, the more points you get . Targets are from 230 to 1000 yds .Shooting position your choice, prone or bench.

Re: Rayners 1000 Yard Match Results 5/28/2012

The basics are we have three (3) positions on the lower half of the range and three (3) positions on the upper half with two (2)different distances to shoot at at each position. You get three (3) shots at each distance so that translates to six (6) shots at each position times six (6) positions which means you need thirty six (36) rounds to complete the match.

Now for the specifics, I've forgotten some of the target sizes but I'll list them best I can and point value for each station. You shoot 3 shots at each station, what you shoot at with your 3 shots and their point value is added up for that station. I have them listed as to what targets are at each station but forget which station was designated a station number.

234 yards - 3 shots at 1 target worth 10 points each hit.
400 yards - 3 shots at your choice of 2 targets. Large circle 10 points, small rectangle 15 points each hit.

300 yards - 3 shots at 1 target worth 10 points each hit.
375 yards - 3 shots at 1 target worth 10 points each hit.

500 yards - 3 shots at your choice of 4 targets. Large square 5 points, large rectangle worth 10 points, smaller rectangle worth 15 points, small rectangle worth 20 points each hit.
590/600 yards - 3 shots at your choice of 4 targets. Large square worth 5 points, large circle worth 10 points, smaller rectangle worth 15 points, 8" circle at 600 yards worth 20 points each hit.

630 yards - 3 shots at 1 15" circle worth 10 points each hit.
700 yards - 3 shots at your choice of 2 targets. 15" circle worth 10 points, very small rectangle worth 20 points each hit.

650 yards - 3 shots at your choice of 2 targets. 15" circle worth 10 points, small rectangle worth 15 points each hit.
720 yards - 3 shots at your choice of 2 targets. 15" circle worth 10 points, very small rectangle worth 20 points each hit.

900 yards - 3 shots at your choice of 4 targets. Same targets used at the 500 yard station with same point values. See above for specifics.
990/1000 yards - 3 shots at your choice of 4 targets. Same targets used at the 590/600 yard station with same point values. See above for specifics.

There is no time limit but if a shooter takes too long to shoot then we do use a timer set to 2 minutes for each 3 shot station. Plenty of time to make adjustments and take the shots.

Hope this helps but I didn't bring one of the new target size and distance sheets home this weekend. Hope to see you there.

I'm glad Cory didn't make it. I couldn't handle it if I'd been beat by 4 260's!!

Great post Topstrap on the rundown of the match. To give new shooters an idea of the timeframe, we ran our squad of 14 shooters through the longest stage on the bottom (position 1) in 19 minutes. And that was with one shooter that is legally blind!!! We don't rush any shooters but, we run our squad well. When one shooter is done with his bench or their spot on the ground, they peel off and the next shooter takes their place. You can B.S. when your done shooting.

We share the spotting and scoring as well. Having your eye in the spotter for the whole match takes more of a toll than you'd think.
