This was the last match for this year. Where did the season go? Ended up my son kicked my butt with his new Lilja 260 barrel for the season. He has a few matches we all thought he'd hit that magical 300 score but so far none of us have shot it with a pistol yet.
Weird winds this last match even though it looked like a great day to shoot. I cleaned the bottom half of the course and thought this may be the day for my 300 but on top of the hill it was a totally different story. In this game close don't count and I only connected 4 times which made for a pretty poor showing.
My son missed a few on the lower half and I thought I've got him today but he tightened up and connected on a cigarette pack size target at 700 yards for 20 points and also 2 out of 3 hits on the little 8" circle at 1000 yards for another 40 points to pull ahead and put me in my place AGAIN. Not sure any of the rifle guys have hit that one more than once in a match in 3 shots. Still done with a pretty much standard XP-100 with a 15" barrel and old laminated stock with a bipod and wooden wedges stuffed under the mid-grip.
Good for him, he's come a long way but we're putting together a Savage model 10 rifle in 260 for next year he wants to play with. I think he thinks it'll be a lot easier and hopes to move up quite a few points and play with the big boys. He's pretty methodical and learns quick so I think if they thought he did good with his pistol look out with the rifle.
Still wondering why no other SP guys don't show up for the matches. Where else can you shoot out to 1000 yards every month but maybe since there isn't a prize table it keeps everyone away. Great fun, very challenging and you'll learn more in a couple of matches than a summer at a practice range.
Overall there were super turnouts with an average of at least 50 or more shooters at each match and a great time was had by all. Come on out next year and join in.
