I've been wanting to get into First Person Video where you fly via goggles and a camera - This video has convinced me to do it..

Cool song too.

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

That is pretty awesome. Something I've always wanted to dabble in just don't have the time right now. From what I've read its not all that expensive either.

I'm sure you already know but in case you don't here is a site with lots of useful information for getting started.

Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

Nope, not as long as you have a spotter.

Imagine flying up the side of Mt Rainier - man..

FAA requires max elevation 400 ft but everyone breaks that..

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

That's really cool. If I didn't live in the middle of flat ass cornfield heaven I'd have to look into that hobby. Not much to look at around these parts though.

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

Cornfields woudl be pretty from the air, unless you raan out of battery and got lost IN the cornfield!

This is going to require me to upgrade to electric, and get an HD PRo, and a Shark headband...I'm guessing about $1000 to $1500 to get into it...but WOW!

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

Well I ordered up a new Zephr II flying Wing, electric, with motor and speed control.

Next will be the goggles. We have some gorgeous mountains here and my plan is to fly up them and video tape them.

The new Zephr (Same as the one in that vid) has a box to stash a Go-Pro camera in for recording.

Damn, just when I had some money in savings.....

I wanted an M40A1 but never got my motorcycle sold..

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

Damn guys - this pst week instead of hanging here I'm on an FPV message board sucking up information.

It's been a dream to own an A-4 Skyhawk turbine powered with an FPV set - since 1986!!!

So waiting on stuff to show up....:)_

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

Team Blacksheep is very good at telling you every component of their builds. Look'em up!

Take a HAM radio course and get licensed if you are US based. Not that difficult if you have some Physics background.

IT's easy to blow 2k on a wee Zephyr.

Watch out for new FCC (and or FAA) regulations in 2012!

Post you Builds here!

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

Dang I hadn't been back to this site for a while - been over on Team Blacksheeps website and FPV labs.

FPV is very new to me....R/C is not, but FPV talk is..

I just got a Zephyr II, arrived on porch while I was here at work...
2.4 ghz 500mw Tx/Rx
TBS69 Camera wtih TPU

Waiting on the EzOSD...

I've dropped about $800 into this already, no goggles yet..

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

That's pretty cool! I used to have a model rocket that took pics during the ejection phase at the top of it's accent.

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

Arctic, got out to 1 mile this evening with the longer Rx antenna (1/2 wave length) with the Tx pointed straight at the plane, pretty sure I can go further.

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

Right on! I'm learning the basics of electrics, ordered up some cable and connectors to make a Y adapter.

Got 2 - 4S 3300 batteries, the wing is together but needs sanding now...and equipment...will be a while though.

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

Just flying around east of Ransom KS. Start the trip to one mile @ 14:00

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

Right on!!

Here's my build so far...should be done this weekend until all of the electronics get here...

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

I have watched a couple of you tube videos on some crazy fast gas turbine planes and always thought they were kind of a waste since in just a few seconds they were out of sight. Now I could see using this kind of system and covering some ground really quick, that would be a neat video.
Nice landing in that side wind 50cal...

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

I've been ordering parts just waiting. I made a couple of antenna for the UHF, scheduled to take HAM test in 3 weeks...

Just waiting on a few parts..

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

It's coming together nicely. I can't wait to hear your UHF experience (let you test before I buy) LOL.

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

This looks cool, so is this r/c planes being flown from live video to a person? Just want to make sure, so basicly your own drone?

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

^^ Yup, like a drone. With OSD (On Screen Display)hardware like RVOSD gen5 you can set 3D waypoints and the plane will fly the pattern. It also has Alt hold / Direction hold and RTH (Return To Home). It can't land the plane yet.... but another OSD called RUBY can do that to.

You use a video camera to a radio downlink and with that hooked up to your video goggles or TV you can fly. Either use dead reckoning or use the heads up display onscreen from you OSD.

Hey Arctic Light I'm not knocking EZUHF by any means but I wanted to say I've had great times with my Dragonlink setup on my 9X running ER9X Firmware and pogo board.

Easy to say but that's about $500 on just a TX/RX unit.

After watching the video that Arctic posted I was wondering how you would know where the plane, or "you", were at once it's out of sight.

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

If you check the videos with an OSD you will see on most an arrow right in the center of the screen, that always point "home" or where you initialized the GPS.

Nice bluebeam arctic! What video TX is that? The build looks good. I'd post some of my pics... but I have none in my current sandy location.

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

Sorry I did n't get back here sooner, that's a Lawmate 500mw Vtx!

Here's the maiden flight , I ran out of UP trim and being a flying wing it was hard to tell where to start - but tha'ts been corrected.

The speed controller fried on me and I stalled out at the end, almost saved it - no major damage that wasn't fixed when I got home - so now I'm waiting on a new ESC and I'll be actually flying via the goggles.

This was a LOS flight:

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

I just jizzed in my shorts! That's freakin sweet. This FPV thing is surely the next step for me...I've been eyeballin' that Black Sheep equipment for a while now. Do you think I'll be able to fit the camera and transmitter/battery in the canopy of this?

IMG_0385.jpg

IMG_0386.jpg

Is your plane's transmitter/receiver a JR or Futaba? The range is probably limited to a mile right? What you need to do is hit Deception Pass and go fly under the bridge....I did that in the Prowler simulator years ago.

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

if you look on the left wing (Righit in the photo) you'll see the 2.4ghz Video transmitter.
On the right wing is a UHF rc radio - Trappy has used the EXACT setup and has flown 27 miles, MILES round trip - NO you are not limited to 1 mile.

I prefer 72mhz if you are NOT using UHF - it can go 2-3 miles and I have flown LOS out to a mile....in the past.
2.4 Ghz Rc radios - Very limited on range...find an old 72mhz and buy the UHF TX - it straps on the back of the 72mhz.

On the right wing near center is the GPS and On Screen Display (OSD - mixes signals) - it takes the signal strength from the RX receiver and the GPS coordinates, speed, altitude and puts it on the screen (See end of video for that)...
Here's the UHF transmitter attached to my 72mhz TX:

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

I wish i had never found this post. I really would like a helo with the camera setup, maybe i will have to start with one of these.

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

Another video I did yesterday, spent more time doing proximity flying to get used to the plane..

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

Saito, first off love the name. a GoPro should fit under the canopy. I personally don't like having to look though a cheap plastic canopy as it kills the image clarity. I know that GoPro camera fit under the T-28 canopies and have strapped little keychain cameras onto my P-51. You can always buy another canopy to try it.

Here is the last flight of my 3rd P-51. I lost pose for some reason. Couldn't diagnose and everything was several feet apart and unplugged when I got to the scene. The esc was destroyed so I couldn't test it either. Thats just part of the hobby though. Your planes will crash eventual. This was my 3rd flight on the plane though.

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

Yeah, I've come to realize that crashes are a way of life if you're gonna get airborne. I enjoy building/rebuilding my planes though. I actually had to solder my ESC wires after my last catastrophic collision(cuz they were ripped out of the receiver). Sheared the motor shaft too and left the fuselage in 3 pieces. The elevator clevis failed, I believe due to a mid-air with a friend last year.

If I mount a camera under the canopy, it'll protrude through the front so I won't be looking through the plastic(but still be looking through the prop). If I could make the whole top hatch contain the transmitter/camera/battery that would be awesome.

My screen name actually came from Ghost in the Shell. The fact that there are Japanese Saito engines is just a cool coincidence.
smile.gif

Arctic Light- Thanks, I'm delving into the UHF thing now and looking to put a UHF transmitter on my DX6i, if possible(even though the 2.4Ghz is technically UHF, right???). I'm a newb to this R/C stuff. I don't plan on getting the GPS and telemetry stuff right off the bat, just a camera and a set of goggles. I think landing this taildragger in FPV may be a bitch?? I may look at one of the Parkzone Strykers for my FPV bird, due to the fact that the prop is in the rear....or maybe an EDF Habu.....damn the bank account, FULL SPEED AHEAD!!!

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

Saito, I actually found landing via FPV far more rewarding, and far easier than doing it by line of sight.

I will never fly line of sight again LOL, there's no point in going in circles when you can go ANYWHERE with the goggles..

On the DXI thing - I would strongly advise you to get an older 72mhz Futaba and ditch the 2.4 *IF* you plan to do 2.4 video.

I have enough issues with the 2.4 wireless routers around the fairgrounds - and houses...

The lines you see are 2.4 interference - my buddy left his TX powered on about 15 feet from my 2.4ghz receiver, not to mention the wireless routers:

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

Saito, I would not recommend putting everything in the canopy. Its only a post and magnet so with any weight in a roll it will fly off. I have seen the canopies fly off form really awesome snap rolls on their own.

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

Arctic, are you using the video out on the Go Pro to fly through? That looks way better than my SN555 camera.

This is my best one yet. 1.5 miles. I did just get a Corona RP8D1 RX. If I get a solid three miles out of it I'll be tickled to death for $22.

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

Nah I have the Team-Blacksheep TB69 - the GoPro is doing the nice video.

Basically I bought a Go-Pro and built the plane around it LOL

Damn that's some nice clear video!

I'm fighting the 2.4ghz channel as I knew I would - I have a secret weapon to combat it though LOL...

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

Well the youtube videos are all through the trusty "808" keychain camera. Can't beat it for $13.

I did figure out how to unlock my Lawmate. The trick was figuring the dipswitch combination for each channel.

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

Ok, you guys have sold me on my....5th??? really expensive hobby. Good thing I'm not married yet because then a lot of my fun stuff will probably have to go to some lucky kid neighbor when that happens.

A couple of questions:

1. TX - I want to eventually do long range to go exploring, and don't want to get a bunch of different TX sets as I step up in proficiency. Some sites have recommended the JR PCM 10x for use with dragonlink. I have some more reading to do, but thought I'd find out from the guys doing it right now what they like...so...thoughts on this?

2. Beginner plane for LOS flying. I'm looking for something durable. I will probably be crashing it a lot.

3. Start cheap on antenna setups for the period of short training flights? Or do these things not break as often as I would believe?

4. Would any of the setups you can think of fit in a 46L Givi case (i.e. plane that is easy to take down the wings and reassemble periodically)? I have this dream of hopping on my R6, which I have recently done a rear seat mod to add the case, and getting a nice ride in on the way to and from RC flying.

This site gets me in more trouble...

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

TNT - TX - I'd recommend the EZUhf, myself and many others use that.
Dragonlink OK too, but I have no experience with it.

Trappy flew 89km straight out (Not back) with EZUHF, he flew 18.6 km round trip, 27 miles round trip...all the EZ products rock.

As for a plane there are several, I'm building an EZStar right now as it's a popular one. I upgraded the motor so I can cruise 60mph, got rid of the inrunner and put a 1200kv outrunner on it..

EZStar - google it

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

Arctic, you get any distance with the UHF yet? I got my Corona plumbed in with a half wave antenna. Zero glitches at 2 miles so far, I'm sure I can go further. Best $22 I've spent on this stupid hobby so far.

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

I've only got about 1 km so far...stupid cell phone had bluetooth on it!! 2.4ghz jammer in my pocket LOL

will try again soon enough
smile.gif
i'm waiting on some parts for the plane, wood vs foam...:)

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

Here is some video from last week. Finally got to use this plane for it's intended purpose, scouting. Whitetails were pretty easy to find on the greenish wheat fields. Pigs should stick out big time.
