RCBS Precision MIc tool

Re: RCBS Precision MIc tool

Have about 4 precision Mics.
Never found the bullet seating depth thingy to be worth a damn.

Make up your own dummy load and smoke the bullet with a ligher or paint it and then look for rifling scrapes to know you're in the lands.

Re: RCBS Precision MIc tool

The precision mic is used to measure your case and determin how to set up your die to bump your shoulder back. As for finding seating depth, it's not a good tool for that.

Re: RCBS Precision MIc tool

The "proper" way to use the precision mic to obtain the ogive position in your chamber (to useful accuracy) is to take a case (fired from that rifle) and partially size only 1/2 the neck. Then seat a bullet (from the lot you intend to use) in the neck very long (0.100 long if you can muster this). Now carefully chamber this round and extract it with exceeding care. Measure the ogive position in your RCBS case micrometer with the 'other' wheel. Repeat until 3 measurements come out within +/- 0.001. Then you know the position of the lands in this rifle for that lot of bullets.

Do not use the plastic bullet supplied or the plastic case supplied. YO can use these but don't trust the measurements--so why bother.

Re: RCBS Precision MIc tool

The "Precision Mic" case shoulder and bullet seating thimbles are great tools. That lousy 'free-bore' tool, the dummy cartridge, is basically useless, IMHO.

+1. Great for setting up a FL die for the correct case headspace, but suggest you use the Stoney Point/Hornady OAL Gauge for bullet seating purposes.
