I need a little help here, I am looking at rebarreling one of my rifles I have home. I have a Remington 700 complete rifle, it is a .270 Winchester.

I have been looking around to see if I could rebarrel this action with a .308 barrel and if it work good. If this could be done what all would I need to do? Would I need to get a new bolt and stuff to do.

Would everything stay the same and all I do is swap out the barrels on the action? I am trying to find out what can done with this if anything at all.

Send it to a smith and have it rebarreled as a 6.5x55 swede.

If you must do a 308, it just needs a barrel. It will be a long action 308 which would allow a longer OAL.

I still say 6.5x55.

The bolt face remains unchanged between the 270 and 308. You will need to have a smith fit the barrel to your action to make sure there are no headspace issues.

I'd probably stay in the long action family of cartridges just to get the most out of it. Otherwise trade it off for a short action and run 308.

I'd go 280AI if it was mine. You can get a magazine block if you have any feeding issues. It takes up some of the unused space in the magazine. If you really want a 308, I'd trade it for a short action and just build off of that.

I have a .223 short action that I am looking to trade because I want to build a 7mm Mag. All your smith would have to do is open the bolt face, pretty simple to do.

It's currently barreled, and a fine shooter as it is, but I got a fever and the only prescription for it is 7mm magnum

If you want my SA to build a .308, I would take your LA for my 7mag build....

Sounds interesting but let me think about it. I might just end up selling it with the scope and all the .270 ammo I have with it as a package deal. I think it might be easier for me to just have caliber to shoot and stick with instead of different ones to have to deal with.

Ok thanks for the info, I was under the impression that it was a SA. I will look into a little more.

You know I have never shot anything bigger than a 308 except a 30-06 and I did not like it due to the recoil ( yeah I am a little recoil sensetive due to an injury ). I have no idea how anything else is to shoot or how much recoil anything else would have compared to the 308.

I have been eyeing and have been interested in something like 7mm mag but again I have never shot one so dont know how much recoil it has compared to a 308. Anyone tell how it compares or how any of the others listed do?

Recoil from a 260 will be less than a 308 and as previously stated, it has much better ballistics.

I still say have a smith put a 6.5x55 barrel on your 270 and be done with it. ER Shaw (yes I said shaw) will install a new barrel for ya for 300 plus shipping.

Rim size is different .06 (270W) at .473 to 6.5x55 at listed at .480 in Hodgdon's #26 manual. He would still have to modify the bolt.

Convert to .308W if you want standard. If you want a hotrod look at 6.5-06. It will work with your current bolt, hold more rounds in the magazine then the 6.5-284 or straight .284 and is very flat. Additional upside is that you can use .25-06 brass without modification. Downside is that barrel life if you get it hot, like F-Class at less than 2000 rounds.

Ok thanks guys I will just stay with a 308 or look at a getting a 223 for kicks. I am looking at what grain 223 I can shoot with a 223 bolt gun.

I know it needs to be heavy rouds in 223 and from my understanding it that you do not shoot 5.56mm with a 223 bolt gun. This is due to the fact that 5.56 being a military round is hotter and has more pressure than 223.

You should be able to shoot the 75 grain amax in a 9 twist. They would be an inexpensive low recoil round for ya. If you want to shoot the expensive 90's you'll need a 7 twist.
