Suppressors Real world time to get a supressor

Re: Real world time to get a supressor

If you're serious about getting the right one the first time, it could take as long as a year

I did at least 7-8 months of good research before I "pulled the trigger" and I'm glad I did. Even though I chose a suppressor in the middle of the class, I'm thankful for the knowledge I gained in the process.

Shoot me a PM Jeremybj, I know lots of owners and dealers here in SD.

Re: Real world time to get a supressor

From the time I purchaseed my first and filled out the paperwork and send it in to BATFE, it took about 3 months. I have 2 more going through the process right now. We will see if they come in at about the same length of time.

Re: Real world time to get a supressor

I did a transfer of an in stock can to a trust. Paperwork went in right around Valentine's Day, and I picked the can up on 4-7-11.

Re: Real world time to get a supressor

my 1st one took a year, my last one took 6 weeks. there is no set time line. patience is definantly a virtue

I would have gone nuts. We have to have a C&R FFL here to have one. STATE LAW requires it, "before some jack leg comes in here from S.C. and tells me No you don't". Been waiting on that to clear and its killing me. Been only 6 weeks so far and its killing me.

I already made up my mind on a can through research and am trying to demo a couple to compare.

Re: Real world time to get a supressor

Currently my Form 4 transfers are running 120 days. There was a bit of a sales boost from WA changing their laws to allow the use of silencers.

The law goes into effect July 23, and I am expecting Form 4 times to go out to about 10-12 months once the rest of the state finds out they are GTG.

I'm assuming only about 10% of gun owners in WA know the laws have been changed.

Re: Real world time to get a supressor

Mine have all been about 3 months. With the exception of the 3 week wait when my dealer ordered an SWR Spectre for me.

Two of mine I purchased off gunbroker from R and M up in Wasilla Alaska and his FORM 3 transfers to my dealer were only 3 weeks, then it was just a little over two months to get the FORM 4's back.

It all depends on who the Examiner is. I have read that some take much longer on the FORM 3 transfers so this would add time.

If you go to NFA tracker you will see the times for different examiners wait times on FORM 3 XFER's etc. Click here: NFA TRACKER

Re: Real world time to get a supressor

Most of the Form 4 transfers we have been dealing with is around 60 days from when we build out the forms. Most of our customers will send in the paperwork the same day or a couple of days of us completing it for them. Form 3s are taking us about 3 weeks. Thankfully, our examiner is pretty quick.

Re: Real world time to get a supressor

My first one took four months. I have two more in process and it has been 72 days since mailing the paperwork. I work at the Sheriff's office here and the girls in the Concealed Handgun office (where the paperwork is processed) tell me there has been a huge uptick in NFA forms this year. Guess I may have to wait even longer.

those numbers are "were" identical to mine... the form 3's were 3 weeks, and the 4's were about 2 months... somethings changed, cause both are taking a bit longer... sucks ...

Re: Real world time to get a supressor

I'm starting the process to get a suppressor in St Charles County Missouri. Can anyone tell me how the Sherriff Dept is on signing off on a suppressor request? It seems on CCW's they wait the maximum amount of time allowed. Would I be better trying my local police dept. or do I have to go to the Sherriff's Office?

Re: Real world time to get a supressor

- Form 3 from a manufacture to my dealer in NC = 3 weeks
- Running around to get finger print cards, photo, and CLEO signature = 1-2 days
- Form 4 individual transfer & Form 1 = ~90 days from the time the package is mailed till the stamp is recieved

A good friend of mine gave me some very good advise prior to getting into the NFA game.
He suggested this approach to me and I sure am glad he did.
Ended up getting to know my Sherriff pretty well and now every time I need a CLEO sign off, I need to allow an hour or two to account for conversation.

Approach the CLEO sign off like a job interview.
- Have all of your paperwork complete and ready to sign with signature flags.
- Learn all State and Local laws regarding NFA stuff and bring copies of them with you.
- Make an appointment to see him, but be vague with the purpose.
- Dress nice and be courteous.
- Explain the NFA process to him and honestly convey why you want the items.
(If you want them just to collect and have fun, then tell him that.)
- Be sure to tell him that the purpose for his signature is to ensure that it is legal for you to posses, not a personal endorsement.

Whatever you do, do not say "If you don't sign I'll just go around you via a Trust."
Not a good way to make friends.

Re: Real world time to get a supressor

Just my opinion, but a trust is a better way to go anyway. You can put multiple people on a trust, and succession can be addressed. My local shop sets up trusts for free.

Re: Real world time to get a supressor

I would plan on four months. Im at 3.5 and still waiting. Some people do get lucky, but thinking about it and hoping to be one of the lucky few has just irritated the hell out of me.

Re: Real world time to get a supressor

My form 3 dealer transfer took about 3 weeks.

My form 4 transfer, from mailing until receiving my stamp in the mail, was 108 days.

I spent about 3 months researching and dithering, plus it took a couple of days, once my dealer had my can, for me to get the form 4 signed by my CLEO and the prints put on the card and mailed.

So, figure 3-5 months for the whole deal--and on the shorter end if your dealer has the can in stock.
