I'm moving this to a new thread so as not to threadjack the OPs thread about his new Savage F-TR.

It gets overlooked in most discussions because it's not as sexy as other gear, but your rear bag and using it properly will save or cost you more points than your bipod.

I run a Sinclair v3, and I really like it, but getting my rear bag right has picked up more points than switching from a Harris did.

so what rear bag do you like?

I use an Edgewood, but it's less about which than how. Bag with ears need to either be so hard that you ride on top of them w/o settling or letting the butt drop under recoil or they need to be soft enough to let the rifle down onto the main bag w/o pushing it up. It took me months to learn to make the ears on mine soft enough and I've fired over 1200 rounds since Jan of this yr mostly in competition. I'm sure I was losing three to five points earlier this yr just due to fighting with my rear bag.

XTR, with regards to choice of rear bags, do you think it has as much to do with mating the stock with the correct rear bag. I have PR&T F/TR stock, the stock has a nice 1/2 inch + flat on the bottom. Now looking around for something better than I currently have, I keep coming back to Protektors custom bumble bee dr rear bag, unfortunately it just seems way too tall at 4 inches. Edgewoods 2 inch minigater with regualr ears and 3/8 spread between them seems like the best option. I suppose the only way to find out is to buy one and try it out.

    Re: Rear bags and bipods

I think the stock makes a difference, but I also think rear bags are one of those things that will have a lot to do with how you shoot and your ergos. Some folks are comfortable getting behind a short bag and others want one that's taller.

Getting a solid base that wont wobble on you and getting the ears filled to a point that supports the stock through the recoil w/o causing the POI to shift up or down is the key. Danny Biggs uses a shooting mat with a hole cut in it so the bag isn't on padding and has gone so far as to mount his Edgewood to a board. (same size as the base but it's a board. I'm thinking that I may cut the hole in my mat by next yr not that I notice the wobble but it should lower my bag 1/4 to 1/2 inch and I think I'll like it better that way.

BTW, I'm switching to a PR&T stock next yr too.

    Re: Rear bags and bipods

I put a PR&T stock on my latest F-T/R match rifle. I have just shot one match with it so far, and I like it very much. My current bag is a Protektor with rabbit ears. I have not decided if I need to change anything with the bag yet.

    Re: Rear bags and bipods

I have an edgewood bag that i use for my br rifles. I have set my a-5 stocks in them with my sinclair front rest and they fit so nice. If i ever shot a f class match thats probably how i would do it. Feels so nice
