Hello all,

First let me appologize if this question is beat like a dead horse. I am contimplating building a long range gun but looking for the pro's and con's of a tactical bottom. My perference has always been blind magazines due to cost, weight, and my tendancy to beat the bottom metal up. Thank you for your imput and help.

Re: Reason for a tactical bottom?

Sorry, I hit enter twice before I even asked the question.

Re: Reason for a tactical bottom?

I should have added that this will be a build for hunting. I am thinking of a Defiance action with Benchmark Barrel in 308 tapered to .625 at the crown bedded in a McMillan Edge.

Re: Reason for a tactical bottom?

I'll ask again, are you referring to a detachable magazine?

For a hunting rifle with an EDGE stock, I'd go ADL or BDL, whichever works for you. The only 3 advantages to a detachable mag in that case might be quicker loading/unloading, ability to seat bullets a little longer out and the ease of feeding those long bullets.

Re: Reason for a tactical bottom?

Sorry Jason, I'm new to this and am trying to research and learn.

I guess I am wondering the benifits of a M4 or M5 bottom metal on a build vs. a blind mag.

Re: Reason for a tactical bottom?

I'd just go factory adl or bdl, whichever works for you. Here's two lightweights I built.

McMillan Classic in EDGE
26" Rock, 1-10", #3 contour
Rifle Basix Trigger
Leupold 3-10x40 VXIII w/ M1 Elevation
Talley LW's
Should go about 8# even w/ Butler Creeks and Mtn. Sling

Re: Reason for a tactical bottom?

A tactical bottom helps you sit in one place for 13 hours waiting for your suspect to come out. Without a tactical bottom, you would be dying from ass abrasions.

Re: Reason for a tactical bottom?

Depending on your hunting regs(like Washington) a Dbm can be handy when you are road hunting since the rifle has to be empty when you are in or on a vehicle.

Re: Reason for a tactical bottom?

I live in WA State and a detachable magazine would be very useful when hunting since you can't drive with bullets in the rifle. Moving to another area, you have to unload before getting in the truck and load up again after .... etc. Having a box mag would allow you to just drop it out and stick it back in without having to finger the rounds each time.

Re: Reason for a tactical bottom?

Strength of the trigger guard is why I chose mine. It is a PITA to carry slung across your back though.

Re: Reason for a tactical bottom?

For a hunting rifle, BDL hands down!!!!

The ONLY time I would ever consider another DBM is if I absolutely need the extra length for COAL.
