who makes a good barrel for a remington 700... im looking to redo my current rig... im going to re barrel it and get a stock put together... first step barrel... shilen, bartelin, douglass, er shaw.... too many to choose from.... i want .5 moa or better and looing to spend around 600-700 on the re barrel... any thoughts?

Re: rebarrel a remington 700

mmmmm,, any of them will work for you.. not saying your going to get .5 moa by putting a new barrel but any decent barrel maker will make a better barrel than stock.. iv chosen mcgowen to make me a barrel for my budget build, havent ordered it yet.

Re: rebarrel a remington 700

I would order one from Mike Rock, he will chamber and set it up for you for about $500.00 including the cost of the barrel which runs around $350.00.

Re: rebarrel a remington 700

I'm looking to do the same pretty soon too. Probably be looking at Krieger or Bartlein depending on what/when I can find it in stock and not wait 6 months.

Re: rebarrel a remington 700

Most of the top barrel makers, including the ones you mention, should be able to do a rebarrel job within your budget. Everybody has their favorites, but if you stick with the top names (Krieger, Bartlein, Shilen, Hart, Broughton, Rock, Douglas, Shaw, etc., etc) they will all be pretty close in terms of performance.

Depending on your timing, availability may determine which one you choose.

Re: rebarrel a remington 700

My top 2 have been Krieger and Bartlein. I know PCR just changed their way of truing the action and charges less. I would say check them out. You could probably have the action trued, and rebarreled for 700. And the thing would hammer.

Re: rebarrel a remington 700

thats pretty much what i gathered ... what really makes the difference is the lead time... I talked to bartlein... they are the winners by far... alittle more $$$$ but as we all know its worth it in the long run....
my next question is... I want to run 168 gr. for 2 reasons will be used for nothing larger than deer and 168 gr is just about perfect for deer and also for competition.... what barrel twist to go with??? im thinking 1:11.25 or 1:12.. i want to specifically set this rifle up for a specific load / bullet so everything already figured out..... am i being crazy or am i making sense?

traditionally i load 168 SMK in a mil casing 49.0gr IMR 4350 and a cci BR#2 primer.... (to me a compressed load will give the most consistent burn, my fps standard deviation is about 8-11 FPS) and id like to continue using this load it works well in hunting and paper punching..

Re: rebarrel a remington 700

If you watch the classified section here on the hide, barrels pop up all the time for sale. I guess people order them, wait, and in the mean time, decide to go in a different direction. I found a .30 5R 1-10" stainless fluted Obermeyer last week for a planned build and waited all of four days for it.

Also, just try a web search. There are plenty of barrels around and if you're a bit flexible, one can be found quickly.

Re: rebarrel a remington 700

Contact bugholes here on the 'Hide as he stocks quite a few barrels from some of the better manufactures out there, has good prices and is a great guy to work with. My preference is with Brux but if you stay with the top manufactures it is very hard to go wrong.

Re: rebarrel a remington 700

How does the barrel you have now shoot? Rd count? Might I suggest if accuracy is sub MOA you consider doing all your load work up, chronographing, actual real world trajectory charts etc and squeze all the juice out of it prior to changing barrels.
( this comes from exprience shooting the 7 mags for many decades and many, many barrels. You will never put one back on, so use it up.
Do not use a Krieger CM barrel. SS is great. Rock or Bartlien are also great. Good luck with your project.

If you want to run 168s 1:12 will do. 1:11.25 is supposed to be ideal for the 175 SMK. Though typically in .30 cal with bullets from 150-180gr at normal (2300+fps) velocities you won't likely see much if any appreciable differences from 1:12 to 1:10.

Re: rebarrel a remington 700

I ordered a Krieger for my new build.
I'm shooting 155 palmas in a 1:11.25 and getting good results despite the monkey pulling the trigger. Don't think you will see a big difference until you get heavier than the 175 smk.
