Re: Rebarreling Question

Sure it's possible, but not simply by swapping barrels. I think you'll need a new bolt head. Depending on your setup, probably a new magazine box too. I have no experience with the 22-250, but I think it's the same bolt head as 223 and such. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but that would be the part I'd be looking at was the small stuff and not just simply swapping a barrel out. I'd also recommend replacing the recoil lug at the same it and any upgrades that you may wish to do to the action, i.e. trueing, timing, etc. Goodluck

Your not going to want to have it drilled out, reamed and re-rifled to a new caliber. Its going to cost too much, plus its just not a good idea.

I have a personal take off barrel I can sell you if you need to do the conversion. The .22-250 has a standard bolt face which is the same as the 308, mag box will work as well. It would just require a new barrel.

If your going to go through all this, I would just recommend truing the action and putting a new barrel in. If your trying to save some money you might have luck putting a factory take off on, but the problem is your will most likely need it to be fitted by a riflesmith.

Headspace, barrel tennon length, counterbore length and thread diameter size may be different from barrel to barrel and action to action, so its a roll of the dice to throw something on.

For the sake of better understanding...

Other than the cost of a re-bore, what are the other downsides to having this done?

Are there situations when the cost benefit ratio might indicate this as a solution?

Thanks

Re: Rebarreling Question

With the cost of a rebore job you could have a match grade kreiger, lilja, shilen, or other premium hand lapped barrel installed. This will cost in the 500-525 range depending on who does the work. But I will warn you, once you have one of these barrels there is no going back!!! And yes the 22-250 boltface will work fine with any of the .308 based cartridges.

Re: Rebarreling Question

Reboring a barrel is a good idea if you are trying to preserve an OEM barrel on a specific model of rifle that cannot be readily duplicated by replacing with an aftermarket barrel. Say you had an original Sharps or Winchester, or a rifle with a unique barrel profile or express sights, or similar rifle with some collector value, but the bore was toast. Reboring and rechambering to a caliber that would work with the material that is left would make sense. Still, you are at the mercy of the profile of the barrel you would have rebored, the quality of the steel and any stress that already exists in the barrel. Delta Gun Shop/Clearwater Reboring is one of the best as Jim Dubiel bought the business from Cliff LaBounty.

TacticalJ - 22-250 is a .473 bolt face so a simple rebarrel will work here.
