I’m working at getting into gunsmithing. I can’t find the info online I’m looking for. Do I need an FFL to rebarrel rifles for others as a hobby? My boss has a FFL. My lathe is in my garage. For the rifles/actions that need shipped can they be run though my boss? Or do I need an FFL sense the guns will be leaving the possession of the FFL?

If the customers are going to leave their receivers with you, then yes to your first question.

The location matters. Your boss cant just let stuff go out the door with you to your premises, on his license, unless it’s going to another licensee. Even if you’re already a responsible person on his license. Your boss would likely need a second license for your location. It is possible to store stuff at an additional location(which the ATF would be aware of), but that isn’t what you’d be doing.

Leaving or not leaving the action/firearm is not the deciding factor if you need an FFL or not. That only pertains to if it needs to be logged into your book or not.

If you are working on firearms as a course of business, you absolutely need to have an FFL, regardless if they are left with you or not.

When does it become I course of business? If I’m getting payed or if I’m doing an X amount?
