Hey guys, I need some wisdom, I introduced my Girl to shooting and she has taken to it well, she handles rifle recoil fine, and shoots lights out as well. I have bene teaching her to shoot a shotgun and she has surpassed my wildest expectations with sporting clays. We have shot two rounds (50 targets each) and she has hit 12 and 28 respectivley, the confidence and muscle memory have come along well.

She likes the 870 pump I have, but she has issues with extended periods of shooting, by 50 rounds her shoulder is sore, I am having her use mild 1 1/8oz loads of 8's, and when she gets used to it we will work up to duck loads and such.

I want to change the recoil pad to try and make it as comfertable as possible for her, the one on it is just hard rubber, but I have no experience with recoil pads on shotguns. Seems like the choices are X-coil, pachmayr, and the decelerator pad. Does anyone have any experience with these?

Re: Recoil Pad for an 870

I have a limbsaver pad that I cut down on my 870. It helps alot.
Also, you might see if you can let her shoot a semi-auto shotgun. The gas mechanism really cuts the recoil and it makes the followup shot much quicker if you throw doubles. I don;t own one but alot of guys I shoot with have Benelli M4s and I shoot those alot. The recoil is almost non-existent with target loads. She could shoot all day and not get the sore shoulder.

Hope that helps,

Re: Recoil Pad for an 870

The only auto I have is a Winchester SX2, and she says its to heavy for her, She likes my friend Beretta 391, but I dont have access to it all the time and I don't have nor will throw down 900 bucks for a new gun for her. This leaves me with doing what I can to make the 870 an enjoyable platform.

Im sure form has some to do with it, I have been systematically making her more aware of what she is doing wrong, and ensuring she is correcting it. However I want to be sure im not being a nag and letting her enjoy shooting (she loves it when shes on). The other issue at hand is that she isn't overly strong for her size, even the 870 gets heavy towards the end of the course. Im hoping adding a 30 dollar pad will cushin things enough to let her build up strength in her shoulders.

The Knoxx stock (owned by blackhawk now, IIRC) really works and make 12ga recoil trivial to absorb. I was fairly shocked to discover that it wasn't just a bunch of hype.

Re: Recoil Pad for an 870

I put a Knoxx stock on an 870, to be disappointed in the way that it "sights". Apparently the Knoxx stock is designed for rifle or ghost ring sights an made it nearly impossible to mount the shotgun with only a bead sight without severely bruising my cheek. Guaranteed to increase flinch and destroy motivation to shoot one more round.

The comb height on the Knoxx stock is designed for elevated sights. If you don't have elevated sights, don't put one on an 870. They do reduce recoil well, but probably isn't the best bet for wing shooting.

The Pachmayr pad is exceptionally good. It is relatively cheap and a big improvement over the factory Remington pad.

I use the Remington SuperCell pad on all my 870s and 7600s (five weapons) and it does make a big difference in the recoil. Best $19 I ever spent.

That's true.

I'll second that. The supercell is pretty impressive for $20. I have one on my 870.
