Hello, lurked here a while before registering but this is my first real post. Read a lot of posts comparing scopes and it is like the proverbial drinking from a fire-hose, so much info I can't distill it down to an answer. Figure may as well ask the specific question.

I am looking for a new scope to initially be switched between an AR-15 and an AR-10 for range work primarily. It may ultimately end up on one of those guns or a 6.5 (grendel or creedmore) or my .308 bolt gun that currently has a Vortex Viper PST 6-24 SFP. Looking for something with upper magnification in the mid-high teens that is fairly compact and light. I would prefer a FFP with a milling reticule. I don't think I need illumination since I am not planning on it being used for hunting, though I am happy to hear arguments to the contrary, and good light gathering would be a plus. My budget is around $2k though cheaper (while still getting the job done) is better. Used is fine provided there is sufficient CS to ensure I'm not stuck with a dud.

I like the Leupold Mk6 3-18 with the TMR in theory but the LGS doesn't carry that type of stuff so I haven't been able to get behind one myself. Any word on those or suggestions for a better option?

As a follow up question any suggestion for a good QD mount that would play well with both ARs and bolts?

Thanks!

Larue is where you should start for QD mounts. Also, I personally like the SWFA SS 5-20 HD if you are in to mil/mil. It will give you a lot more adjustment than your PST (which is still a good scope btw). You can also stick with Vortex and their great CS and go with the Razer HD.

For the hi end light weights, you can't go wrong with the Leupold Mk6 3-18x42, March 3-24x42, or Premier LT 3-15x50. If those tax the budget too hard, you can get a lot of scope for $700-$800; SS 3-15x42, Weaver 3-15x50, PST 4-16x50. The Bushnell DMR 3.5-21x50 and Nightforce 3.5-15x50 are great scopes, but might be too heavy for what you're looking for.

Good Scopes: SWFA straight x 10 power Mil. / 3-10 Vortex Tactical mil-mil (nice for AR/budget system)
Better: Vortex PST mil-mil, Weaver tactical mil-mil FFP
Best: S&B 5-25x56 like PMII LP P4F or other S&B mil/mil models.

..and remember, it is just money!! lol

I would go with an HDMR...will do everything you want, several reticle options and well under your budget which leaves plenty for a good mount. You can even find some good used ones at great prices. I have one and it has been great!
