Recommend a pocket weather station?

Re: Recommend a pocket weather station?

I would atleast get yourself into a 4000 or a 4500 at the minimum for a few nucks more you are there.

We offer the full line of Kestrels on our site in the tool section at the lowest prices.

Re: Recommend a pocket weather station?

The kestrel's are pretty well the standard for scientific use for highly portable in field measurements. We've used the 4000 in the field for a few years now with no problems. We've even left them in the field to take time series data a lot with no issues.

The 4000 has altitude and density altitude functions which is nice if you use it. The 4000 has a lot of other stuff but more for data recording than instant values that would be of help for shooting. If those two measurements are worth the extra $100 for the 4000 is up to the shooter.

Nomad,
I have looked at the differences in the 4000 and the 4500. Can you tell me if the 4500 is needed? I tried to write down what the JBM program on my phone ask's for and then go to the Kestrel site and compare but got confused. Which is easy to do. LOL

Lindy,

Thanks for the info, I went back and did the interactive thing on the Kestrel website and the 4000 will also get you wind speed in addition to what you listed. It looks like the 4500 gets you wind direction and cross wind. Is there not any need for either of those?

Not to me. In my experience, the best use of the wind function is to learn to judge wind speed when you are not shooting, for several reasons.

(1) The wind speed and direction changes too quickly to be useful - with one exception noted below.
(2) The Kestrel tells you the wind where you are. It doesn't tell you either the wind down range, or the wind at the height where the bullet lives.

Now, if you are going to use Bluetooth to feed the wind data to a ballistic program like in the setup below, you may find that marginally useful. It still won't get you wind downrange or at max ordinate.

You certainly ought to - and how are you going to learn unless you got a "precision gadget" at hand?
