New to the game, crew. I have a RRA 16" 1:9. Looking to get as much accuracy as I can out of 1.5" MOA weapon using factory ammo. Hornady TAP 75 grain looks to be only LE. Any recommendations you all could make, I'd be grateful for. Even though I'm an old doc, USMC taught me well

Re: Recommended 5.56 for 1:9 twist

I think Hornady makes a 68gr TAP, there's also several "Match" offerings by Hornady in 68 and 75gr.

The 75's will generally work well from 9tw AR's (Amax excluded) but sometimes not. If that's the case then I'd suggest giving the 68's a whirl too. Still an excellent bullet and the Hornady factory ammo is decent stuff.

I have a Bushy 16" 1-9 that just does not like the Hornady 75 gr or heavier BTHPs. It does great with FGMM 69s and Hornady 68s by Black Hills. If you're not going for long range (over 300 yds.), mine also does really well with the 45 gr. HP Winchester white box varmint rounds (around 1.0 MOA same as the FGMM 69s but a lot less expensive) and about any of the 52 or 53 gr Black Hills match loads. Also, Fulton Armory suggested using 62 gr green tip military rounds for a less expensive but accurate training alternative, if you have access to those at a good price.

If yours does like the Hornady 75s, the CMP has a pretty good price on a case of 200 Hornady Match 75s from time to time. I buy those for my Remmy LTR 1-9.

Re: Recommended 5.56 for 1:9 twist

@Buck: While there is a range about 70 miles from here that goes to 500 yards, I'll more often than not be shooting to 300 yards, so the cheaper alternative, Buck, appears to be a good way to try out.

@bohem, thanks for the info on the Amax exclusion. BTW, I'm in Glenside/Wyndmoor, just outside Chestnut Hill, and about to join up at Ontalaunee, west of Allentown. New Holland is just a bit too much of an arse pain to drive over to.

@Niles: looks like the consensus is 68/69 grain, match and BTHP should make it so that crummy groups are my fault and not the system

My experience suggests you'd have good results with BH reman loaded with the 52 grain open tip boat tail bullet for SR. For mid range, the same ammo loaded with 75 grain open tip boat tail bullet can get the job done.

BTW, some folks blame less than satisfactory results with the 75 grain bullet on the bullet. Usually, it's about the shooter's insufficent follow-through with the heavier recoiling bullet, and which is almost 300 feet per second slower.
