Hi Friends,

I am very happy to report that I was able to convince one of my San Fran friends to buy their first handgun. I was looking to also recommend some good outdoor ranges where he can go and shoot and hopefully participate in some handgun/pistol matches. Does anyone here have some recommendations near zip code 94118? If you know gun shops, near this zip, please share those recos as well.

thanks for the help.

City of SF or what exactly do you mean?

I /think/ only the San Leandro one is open access though there's a non-trivial hourly fee and it can go range-nazi so try to get a copy of the rules and ask questions as they 100% kick people out for first violations.
3001 Davis St 2, San Leandro, CA 94577

At least half a dozen others that I think are all private clubs but I also seem to recall are mostly not overly private so may have periodic open days or can be joined up fairly easily. I'd literally just google, check Yelp, etc. if no one gets back to you here.

Some / most also have instruction so if new to firearms that might not be a bad place to start getting used to the range facilities; have your friends take a few of the half day type intro classes to get feedback-oriented trigger time, hear opinions and options, and also see the facilities before having to arrange everything at a range themselves.

I hope this guys real and not a troll. I’d like to think he’s a modern day Sikh(I assume you are judging by the pic and “Khalsa”) that decided to change tradition and drop the old school Kirpan and carry a pistol instead.

Keep the Chakram though lol.

There used to be only one outdoor gun club on the upper San Fran Peninsula back in the late 90's and they were constantly being harassed by Noise Nazi's and Local Gov inspectors and ordinances. I Think there might still be one in Cupertino and another near San Leandro. Richmond has a gun club across the Bay Bridge. Google is your friend.

I forgot to mention. Plan your trip well enough to give yourself time to go to Everett and Jones BBQ first. Then on the way home go, depending on the direction you're are going, stop and either KC BBQ or Quincy's BBQ. I highly recommend Quincy's in Milpitas, everything they have is homemade including their hot links.

There is an outdoor range off of Skyline Drive near Redwood city. There is also an outdoor range near Sacramento. Don’t know of anything within the SF zip code.

There is an awesome one in the backyard of THIS house.

You have to bring your own targets, but it's completely FREE! Just let yourself in the back gate. If anyone hassles you tell them Fig said it was fine.

Richmond Rod and Gun is probably the best bet. They have a 25 yard static range, plus an action range. Matches every weekend year round.

Probably Richmond and San Leandro, then further out toward Tracy and Modesto.

This is the old Fort Baker 600-yard Known Distance Rifle Range. It closed as a result of the Base Closing Act push to get the military out of California. You can thank Feinstein for that. I don't know where the outdoor pistol range was.

My brother and I shot smallbore in the Presidio indoor pistol range.

Los Altos Rod and Gun. Friendly staff and beautiful setting in the hills above the commies. I’m in HMB and it’s worth the drive for plinking and load development. Once he gets comfortable then he can head out to BLM land about 3 hours away. Stevens Creek may run some matches, but don’t quote me on that. I only went there once and wasn’t impressed. I’ll be at Los Altos on Saturday if you guys want to stop by and shoot some AI’s. Metcalf in SJ is ok, but RSO’s are a bit intense.

Have him ask his local gun shop.
Oh wait San Francisco banned gun shops.

No idea on competitions.
Sunnyvale Rod and gun (south bay)
Los Altos Rod & Gun (south bay)
Metcalf range in San Jose (south bay)
Reeds indoor range (south bay)
Livermore Rod & Gun (east bay)
Sacramento valley shooting center (sacramento)

Why assume he is a troll? Maybe he uses both Kirpan and handgun. I've been around long enough to remember the sh*t VeerG got when some members wrongly associated Sikh with Islamic jihadist - that was God awful, let's never go remotely close to that again. And what a great member VeerG was. Carry on Harjeet.

Sounds like you're trying to find issues where there isn't one.

How is hoping someone isn't making fun of a culture and are actually part of it bad exactly? I could definitely see some folks on here making a profile to make fun of people, and was hoping that wasn't the case. Like I said, I wouldn't put it past some members.

Other people being idiots doesn't really have anything to do with me. I wrote more saying the sikhs I've met have always been very nice blah blah blah, but it seemed like too much and I deleted it

Mile we are Chill Dude...I get there was no mal intention here from your side.

Thanks all for the wonderful suggestions and also for the funny ones. Am still laughing at some of them. Thanks God, I am not in that socialist hell.

@

uncle_smokey: thanks so much for your kind offer. I will check with Soumasish, in case he can make it to the that range on saturday. It would be super cool, if he knows someone on his first day out there. thanks again !

I live in SF. There are no good ranges in the immediate area. Best bet is Richmond Rod and Gun, San Leandro, Coyote Point, Los Altos Rod and Gun Club, Sunnyvale Rod and Gun, and USI. But for the most part, they are all kinda run down. Best range in northern California is Sacramento Valley. There is an indoor pistol range in the east bay somewhere that is pretty nice. Just have your friend do a search on Google Maps.
