Recommended powder to push .300WM to 1760y?

Sierra's accuracy load for th 200s is RL-22, which I would suggest along with RL-25.

VV-165, H-4831sc, VV-170, H-Retumbo, and H-1000, the latter three being pretty slow powders along with RL-25.

I'm not sure about the Winchester powders, 790?, AA-Mag? Tac Magnum?

I'd maybe focus on RL-22, VV-165 and H-4831sc, which are a tad quicker.

Re: Recommended powder to push .300WM to 1760y?

I'm using R22 in my 30-338 Win Mag which is ballistically similar to the 300 WM with excellent results. It is averaging 2980 fps with the 208 AMAX and is extrememly accurate beyond 1K. I have tried R25 but did not get the velocity before I ran out of case capacity. If I recall I'm currently running 69 gr of R22 to get me there with no signs of pressure at all.
Have run it to 3045 with 71.5 but started seeing signs of pressure so I backed it down to 69 where it seems to be very happy.

It's a little better than BLC-2 but I've let a round cook in a warm chamber with the effect to +175 fps.

The difference between first shot in 95F weather and 38F weather was 35 fps.

H1000 if you want a temp insensitive powder. RL22 will do it as well but is more temp sensitive. I used to use RL22 in my 300WM before I changed to H1000 and RL22 would show definite velocity changes from cold to warm weather.

As always work up,... FYI, my chamber is the A19,... for the A191 ammo.

Same experience as Rob.

LW, either H1000 or RL22 will get you there. Both time proven powders for this caliber. I have thousands of rounds over RL22. If I was starting fresh, I'd do whatever I could to get a load with H1000. Only after convincing myself that it just won't do the job would I move to RL22. In addition to being more temp. sensitive, it's filthy by comparison, and according to more than a few, linked to faster barrel wear.

R22 is a great 300WM powder. It will shoot well. If you can get H1000 or Retumbo to shoot, it will give greater velocity than R22. Try Retumbo first, then H1000. Retumbo will give you the best velocity. H1000 will also get you to 1 mile.

Re: Recommended powder to push .300WM to 1760y?

Thanks a lot guys.

I am going to be buying a .300WM 700P in the next few months and want to be prepared to work up a load for it when it gets here.

It's WAY cheaper to just add an extra couple of pounds of likely powders to my regular mail order than to buy them locally.

H1000 is filthy, or RL22 is filthy?

OK... so I am guilty of not so very good English

Rob nailed it. RL22 is much harder to clean from my barrel than H1000. One or two patches with H1000 and it's clean. To get RL22 to the same place took MANY patches and sometimes a brush. YMMV.

Re: Recommended powder to push .300WM to 1760y?

I have handloaded for a friend with a 300WM - 180 and 190 gr SMKs with 4831SC and he was happy with the accuracy.

I am now acquiring my own 700P in 300WM and am looking to explore handloading recipes more in depth.

I have a couple of pounds of 4831sc and one pound of H1000.

I'm open to bullet and powder suggestions to get started.

Thanks!

Re: Recommended powder to push .300WM to 1760y?

Pickup a couple boxes of the 208 Amax, they're about 60% of the price of the 210 Berger, and the Berger is the only bullet in that weight class which can compete with the BC of the 208.

I've shot them with very good results in my 30-06, the quality of the bullet is not suspect whatsoever to me.
