I finally have some time to fire my GAP M40A3 full USMC spec rifle. I haven’t mounted the S&B scope yet. Before I mount he scope I want to break the rifle in using the procedure that GAP suggests on their website. (I know there is a lot of debate about breaking in a new rifle but I have decided to use GAP's suggestion, I have Bore Tech brand and Mike Lucas equipment and solvents for this procedure).

Here are my questions:

1. I plan on using Fed Gold Med 175gr exclusively. However I do have a few boxes of the Fed Gold Med 168 grain. I am planning on using the 168 grain for the break in procedure. Does anyone see a problem with this? (Should I use 175 even for the break in? I’m thinking economy here).
2. I still haven’t decided on what data book I will be using and am currently researching this topic to find the best company. I do plan on purchasing the KAC Bullet Flight ballistic app. for the iPhone but I will also be using paper. In the mean time I would like to create a serious and thorough record of each shot I make for the break in process minus the scope being mounted. What data should I record for each one of these break in shots and is there any recommended book or format I should use to record the procedure?

I want to create a thorough record of data for this rifle from the get go.
Thanks

Re: Recording the break in procedure.

For question #1-Makes no difference on what grain bullet you use to break-in your weapon.

Question #2-For the first to whatever number of shots it takes for your weapon to be sufficiently broke in write...the temperature ,humidity, time of day, wind speed and direction and then that you aimed at the ground and fired. Repeat.

Should be all you need to know for now until you get your scope mounted.

I am confused. What exactly are you going to document (besides round count) without the scope mounted? POA/POI is out if you do not have the scope mounted.

Why not mount the scope, bore sight it and shoots some groups at 100 yds? Record each shot in your data book and then you can see if it "breaks in". I am not scoffing at the break in process at all, but if you are getting behind the gun you might as well sight in the scope and get some practice behind that fine rifle. My guess is it will shoot tight little bug hole groups buddy, I think either way it will be a shooter! Good luck!

Re: Recording the break in procedure.

I did the shoot and clean and when I got to the 5 shot groups it was a one hole group 100 yds. mine is the crusader 308 . GAP ROCK'S man shoot it and have fun be good it it it will be good to you.

Re: Recording the break in procedure.

Of course since it's an M40A3 clone, you could always break them in like the Marine Corps does......

Just sayin.....

Re: Recording the break in procedure.

Barrel companies and folks that sell changing barrels recommending a break in procedure is like a tire company saying you should do burnouts before you use their tires.

Shoot it and keep a round count, or break it in-your choice. Whichever you do, don't get all wrapped around the axle about it, the effort you have put into consideration of documentation has already eclipsed the effort it would have taken to mount the scope and send pills downrange....
