Just tried sizing some once fired Remington .260 cases with my new Redding FL “S” die with a .288 tin coated bushing. The reason for the new die was my Forester die was badly scratching the necks already.(yes I have tried polishing it out) So I inspect the first case and drop it into my case gauge and the shoulder is pushed back between min and max, next I look at the neck and only the first +- .170 of the neck is resized leaving approx. .090 of the neck unsized between there and the beginning of the shoulder. The Forester die sized the neck completely. I measured the location of the bushing and it is bottomed out in the die as far as it can go, then the decap stem was threaded all the way in and backed off 1/8 turn and locked down. I have Redding FL S dies in .308 and 300 WSM and both size the necks completely. Do I have a bad die or am I doing something wrong?

Re: Redding FL S .260 Die question

The bushing dies must be adjusted to maximize neck sizing. There's an internal stem that will control the amount of bushing to neck contact you get.

That being said, only 2/3 of the neck will be sized under normal conditions.

Type S is all I use and that is the norm.

So just sizing the first .170 of the neck is all I need?? Just seems like it would size the neck closer to the shoulder.

Sometimes it's the luck of the draw. I think my 308 bushings in my tandem neck dies only go down, say 90-95%, before bottoming on the die body proper.

Technically, you might be able to grind off some of the bottom of the die, to make it shorter and consequently allow it to 'go down' on the necks more, but I don't worry about it.

This isn't an 'uncommon' problem with Redding bushing dies and I don't know why it should be this way, but it is.

I like to float my bushings slightly, so they self-center themselves, but even cranking them down all of the way, the entire neck doesn't get sized 100%.

What he said, same for me.

Drop bushing in top of die ,tighten all the way dn, back up just a hair to let the bushing float and lock lock collar. Your done, what ya get is what ya need on neck size now.

Re: Redding FL S .260 Die question

totally normal , i called redding about their neck bushing not going all the way to the shoulder and they said it was normal, talked to a benchrest friend of mine and he concured.
6 shots under 5 inches at 911 yards, consistently, and i agree with them.
load them up and try them out.
