Researching optics and not finding any general discussions of "moderate" priced optics, except for a case by case bases which tend to lead to more questions. In particular with the optical quality and adjustment tracking (not shooting for a day job as LEO or military so will just be range and field shooting).
Have limited experiences in the group in Indiana besides with Leupolds and Nightforce, however, starting to think that many of the products form Vortex and Sightron might be a better fit than I expected plus lower cost than either the Nightforce or Leupold Mk4s.
Would appreciate any links to directions to the better discussions that I have missed, or add your comments here.
Of course the discussion will also tend to separate into three general power ranges and usage:
- Low Power Optics of nominal 1 to 4 power
Learned a lot for a start after my questions here: http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthre...078#Post3000078
- Intermediate Power Optics - with a low power of 2 to 3
This range also tends to cover large game hunting scopes
- Moderate Power Optics - with a low power of 4 to 6

For many of us that like shooting a few too many different rifles, run into the issue of finding the best bang for the buck on optics. In the old days (a dozen years ago before finding here and similar) was easy, just purchased a used Leupold when it came through the local store (not many tactical scopes but lots of optics traded in the spring and summer for shotguns). Now days if one has one or two primary rifles then going for a nicer optics is at times a little easier (i.e. I like the Nightforce NXS 5.5x22 on the TRG42 in 338LM and the Leupy Mk4 4.5x14 is working out on the PSS after "borrowing" from the M82A1, but a better choice could maybe have been made), but when buying another scope for a rifle that may or may not work out, one thinks a little more about dropping one to two grand for a scope and more about what type scope one can get that works good enough for the time being and would make a good future project scope if the current rifle does not work out (at the moment my project scope is an old Leupold VarXII 6x18 that is showing it's age).

Once one gets out side the "low cost" scope of several hundred, one has to decide where they wish to stop before just giving up and spending the $1500 for a "nice" but not great scope. See listing at end, realizing there is a lot of gray area between each group.
- Low cost scopes for under ~ $400 ($350 in the one thread)
- Moderate cost scopes for $500 to near $1K - (i.e. Vortex and Sightron)
- "Common" High End Scopes for above $1K to $2K (i.e. Leupold Mk4, Nightforce NXS etc.)
- "Very Nice" High End Scopes (i.e. US Optics, S&B etc.)
