So std range day for me, there before daylight testing N/V shit all good. Right at daylight comes a SUV, pulls right up to the 200yd line where I'm at. We exchange greetings an I stop an add a chamber flag, so he can set his target. He sees it say he is not setting a target, lots of stuff on the bank to smoke he says. OK I go back to shooting subs an he makes comment to the subs/can/ & hits on the bank. Says he has not shot a can past Army days, I think here we go a space shuttle door gunner or something. I ask if he wanted to bang a few, his face lights up an said sure. Ok here she is go for it. The first thing he asks is where is it sighted for, wow, this might be something. Tell him it's sighted for high-speed at 100yds an takes 32 MOA of up to get to 210yds were the junk on the bank is. He looks at the scope(leupold 3.5x10x40 mk4 m-3) an says you shooting the bank on 3.5? Yep I say, he looks thur the scope an says Damn I like that retical. Says the one he used as a std mil-dot, at this point I'm thinking he may be the real deal. He loads the mag, an then asks how do you deal with the first rd pop as the bolt had been open all this time. I point to the eye drop bottle, an he says got it. At this point all doubts are removed, he puts 4 drops of water in the can, installs the mag, gets a long look an pulls the trigger. I did not know what piece of clay bird he was shooting at, but he says Damn, missed it. I ask how much, he says about 1.5"-2.0". So now I ask what you going to shoot next as now I'm looking threw the spotting scope I dragged out. Now mind you I've not said a word as where to hold at 3.5X on this second FP scope with a tree ret. Now I know He's truly BTDT, so lets just see how he does when we change the range, I point out targets at 156 124, 78, 23 yds ect, damn if he did not hit 3 of them out right. He gets pissed at his self for missing but made a comment ( I use ) that floored me, close enough as there are no different levels of dead. At this point we start talking, an he says he's just moved to Bama from a liberal shit hole(his words) but never said which one. We talk about the range, the kind of people that come out, an other things in general. His time was right after mine long ago, how things were back then an how they are now. A very, very good day. Last of this week we are to bang some 300wm an 338LM at a place I have limited access to, should be a good time as he's never banged a 338 before an that place has wind in 3 different directions between muzzle an target across that valley. Even a blind squirrel like me finds an acorn every once in awhile,...

edit, still trying to get it bigger don't know how to do that now??

Inspiring post . And how lucky are you to shoot am during the week .
Lucky? At my age I'm lucky to above ground, LOL. Most all of my public range time any more is early am, by choice. The odds of getting shot when I go are slim but after 0900 they start up on COC days. When the weather is not perfect I'll have the place to myself all day. I really enjoy being there before daylight an until about 0745-0800. 99% of the time it's just me an a guy I call brass man. Brass man made comment once I seem to show up more in bad weather than good? Told him anyone can shoot in COC weather, thats why I come on bad weather days so to have a plausible excuse. He's retired as well an only shoots 22lr at times but, he gets there about 0430 an starts picking up. Most of the time if I'm shooting NV I'll be there before 15-20 minutes before him, if no NV I'll be there about 0500 an just enjoy coffee an mother nature until these old eyes start seeing the berm at 200. After the 200, I'll be on the 25 or 50 shooting pistol until it's time to get out of dodge before all the "SOF" types start showing up. The wild life is everywhere, Turkey, Deer, an all kinds of Birds are all over the place even with the sound of gun fire. Many times I've had to stop shooting to allow the wildlife safe down range passage, makes for great times. I do a little maintenance at times do to typical range asshole/moron that think the metal roofs are targets. Brass man an I team up at times, to repair what those that should not be allowed a gun w/o supervision has shot at or shot up.
The range was built by the state, an was supposed to have the mounted division of the S/O quartered there, an a S/O sub station. That will put a stop to a lot, but it's been so long now that don't think that will come to pass. The S/O brings the jail birds out every week to clean up an mow. Many a local LE agency has training there plus they also have range day there for the open to the public classes the county teaches. Only about 12 miles from home, so it makes it nice an in the early AM as I'm about the only one on the road, save 4 legged things.

Man I hear ya about being alone on the range . Early fall Sunday nights seven or eight o'clock pm amd all is right withthe wotld . We get deer on the range but that's about it . Thanks for the thread . I'm living vicariously thru you and finding great peace just reading your posts on this . ?

Out with him this am, all went great. He was able to read the lay out of the A/O good before his first shot with the 338. He made comment about the 338 wearing the same scope/ret/knobs as the 16" 308 an said nothing to relearn there. Gave him the data card, he ask at what temp/AGL it was for, an where the 240grs would fly based upon a 10*/500' change. he ask about mph the wind reads gave them to him an he never missed a 16"x20" target(20 otal) to 1400yds, just his fist as a rear bag in prone or from the crotch of a tree. He knows quit a bit more than he lets on, as to green rag tasks, as he let a little slip out about how he would bait a KZ. Should be interesting as time goes on, as now he's wanting to get into radio which he says is his weak area. We'll see if that is true or not, over the next few months. One thing is for certain with weapons he is not a FNG, an to tell you the truth he can run circles around me with his eyes closed,...
