I after thinking about it a long time, have decided to take on a daring project, some will say a dangerous suicide mission, a mission that is a waist of time and too risky to attempt

REINFORCEMENT OF THE SPS POLICE/ TACTICAL/ ACC-SD STOCK....DUN DUN DUN ....DUNNNNNN

EQUIPMENT FOR THIS MISSION:
KIWI NEUTRAL POLISH ( RELEASE AGENT )
DUCK TAPE
MASKING TAPE
MODELING CLAY
ALLEN 5/32
DEVCON 10110 OR MARINE TEX GRAY
A LADDER (OPTIONAL)
2X STRAPS (OPTIONAL)
A MILK CRATE (OPTIONAL)

But seriously I do have a stock on order but back-ordered, was going to go with B&C but i think i want to stay with the Tac-21. so in the mean time me and my 6 yr old daughter decided we would walk in the valley of the crazy and desunial and try to fix the flexibility problem of the stock that comes with it from the factory.

as we all know it is flimsy and when you use a shooting bag or bi-pod the end of the stock touches the barrel making for crazy stuff to happen

so lets jump in to it

we working on a Rem 700 sps ACC_SD as seen here

when we removed the stock we took a straight edge and laid on the stock for-end and checked if the stock had a percent of bend, it did not so we checked the barrel valley and from the factory it did not look promising.

we made a jig to apply a small amount of pressure to bend the stock in the opposite direction of the bend that the bi-pod would put on it if it was in action at the range, in our case put on the stock on a jig and this is what we came up with, as seen in pic 1

now this jig is designed that the front is held in potion with strap, this is not to be adjusted. the rear strap is weighted, in this case 18 lbs is put on here and the further away we put the strap it will induce more of a weight and their fore put more pressure, or bend in the stock. we checked with straight edge to get our ruff estimation. our goal was a .015 deflection at the tip of the for-end

ass seen here the reinforcing webbing here is not that grate, actually the webbing on my 770 is much much better!

IMG_0705.jpg

we used modeling clay to cover the sling adapter nut just to make sure i used a release agent on a .308 case and covered it so that no beading compound would get in their and prevent me from accessing the nut just in case i needed to change something up, as well as damning up the webbing here to prevent any going past as well, i would not need this i found out later on but we will get to that

using a aul i picked up from harbor freight i ruffed up the area i will be applying to the compound to stiffen up the stock.

IMG_0708.jpg

and then applied the devcon 10110 to the area

IMG_0709.jpg

to ensure their would not be a clearance problem i applied a coat of release agent to the entire barrel and a piece of duck tape as well. also i used this time to bead the recoil lug in to the stock applying a good coat of release agent to the action side of the lug and a piece of auto masking tape to the sides and the barrel of the lug.

IMG_0711.jpg

and set the barrel back in to the stock and tuqued the barrel back in to the stock 1/2 of the setting from Remington. i did not apply any beading compound to the action as the ACC_SA id a pillar beading system and a full polymer block beading system their is not a real need for beading and also this is just the stock i will be using till i get my Tac-21 stock.

the finish set up looks like this....

now the front strap is around the bi-pod the rear is connected to the milk crate , the father the strap is on the butt the more pressure = bend is applied to the for-end, the closer the less.

i set mine up to open the gap between the barrel and tip of stock to be little more than stock as well give me sanding room if needed is the jig did not worked as planed

So now well get to what happen with the end product.....

i separated the action / barrel from the stock and trimmed down the spots that touched the duck-tape and here we are..

now lets look at the shooting...:)

1st was a 100 yard 5 shot group..175 hornady with match brass cci primer and 41.5 grains of reloader 15....

.589 at 100 yrds, now i like to say the shoot that changed it was me so I'd like to say it was a .374 but we will count it for the members and call it for what it is

IMG_0722.jpg

so lets move out to 200 yards 3 shot groups

same load.....738

and second....786

I am pretty satisfied with this little project.. I am going to be putting a different stock on this weapon waiting on a Tac-21 in the mail but just wanted to share this with the other members that have these 3 guns and having to deal with the stock touching the barrel that their is a simple and cheep way to fix this problem, i have tested the for end on this gun with a straight-edge and 40 lbs on the end their isn't a significant about of bend to report, and sense the barrel, even a over sized bull doesn't weigh that much i believe this a quick and easy fix

I have done something similar with my sps varmint. I milled out the stiffeners in the forearm, and then bedded a block of 7075 T63 aluminum in the forearm. I used my wood router with a metal cutting end-mill and cut the block to free float the barrel. Much less flex from the forearm. I also filled the hollow butt stock with a mix of body filler and fiberglass along with 3 pounds of lead. The rifle is now balanced better. The weight is up to 13lbs. with cheap Remington scope that came with the gun.

Ive done similar. I cut notches in the cross ribs of the barrel channel and layed two 3/16" stainless rods down the barrel channel from the lug well to the end of the barrel channel. Than filled her up with epoxy. Works really well and adds a little more weight up front (it was a sporter barrel) for better balance.

Re: reinforcement of the sps Tactial / Police / ACC-SD

I performed a similar modification to a Savage 110FP many years ago. In that case, I removed the ribs in the forearm and laid down several layers of carbon-fiber cloth and West Systems epoxy. The end result was quite satisfactory in its performance.

Re: reinforcement of the sps Tactial / Police / ACC-SD

done the same thing also with the directional weave carbon fiber cloth & laminated it in forearm . cross layer the directional (stiffness) weave & them press it in & clamp/press till cured .

Re: reinforcement of the sps Tactial / Police / ACC-SD

I tried the arrow shafts and it was better than original, but ended up grinding them out and using metal dowels instead. MUCH better than the arrow shafts. More weight, but much better rigidity. Hope this helps.
